I’m coming from 4 wheel drive full size trucks and two suv’s. All but my earliest trucks had and an auto feature , but my 23 OR is part time 4 wheel drive. My first question is in patchy snow and ice, at what point do you shift into 4W. That was where I shifted to auto in my trucks.

Next question is mud. In my trucks I usually used 4HI when I got in rutted or deep mud, or even sand, but now with my OR I have many more options, but not sure if there is a better option than 4HI and use a little momentum to blast through mud. How do you more experienced 4Runner drivers go through mud? Is there a role for A track or multi terrain select in mud?

On a side note I tore off the air dam and punched a hole in my plastic skid plate blasting though a deep mud hole on my last truck, lol. This was a mushroom picking deal with my wife and 2 elderly dogs that could have went sideways miles from decent roads.

If there is snow and ice in decent quantity I would just have it in 4Hi. If you’re about to round a corner that is 1000% dry, I’d just temporarily shift to 2hi for the corner. I sometimes use 4hi on pavement when there’s a rainstorm too.

For mud I would use 4hi or 4lo depending on speed. Atrac is almost always good to have on in slippery stuff. Multi terrain select has a mud setting. Feel free to try it- Im willing to bet it’s good but I’ve never felt the need or desire to use the multi terrain thing. I do use my locker when it seems justified.

For mud holes and puddles my advice is don’t go very fast. Water can shoot up into the air intake in the fender. And- as you learnt with your other truck- something might break.

Happy to share any other thoughts… and welcome to MUD and Toyotas.

Also, look to see if you've got an info card in the driver's side sun visor. The key piece of info on mine is to keep it under 50mph if using 4hi... and it's 62mph if you have a dial instead of a manual transfer case lever. The owner's manual has a further breakdown on the use of 2hi, 4hi, 4lo, etc.
