I'm going to be moving to the PHX area in the coming months (can't begin to explain how excited I am, actually bringing my FJ40 back home: Tortuga2 2 Indy/Caballo Build Thread ), and am facing DEQ with a 79 desmogged and decatted '40. What does testing entail and what can I be expecting to have to do to get by? Am I looking at full on replacement of smog equipment or is it more lenient than that?

Really appreciate any input from anyone with experience, and can't wait to get there and get involved with the club!

If you have classic car insurance, you don't need to do any emissions testing. Just have to get the AZ copper license plate. I insure mine with Hagerty. If it's your daily driver, you'll have to do some kind of emission work.

Cheers!

Unless you can register the 40 outside of the testing area, yes full smog replacement. They are pretty hard core inside Phoenix metro about that.

Because of the age of FJ40s should get away with the classic route as long as not the main DD. Seems to be the way most go who register them in Phoenix and Tucson areas. I'm about to switch all my registration to Coconino County. Haven't had to deal with a true emissions test for a long time. Only registered our newer DDs in Maricopa county. Dealt with emissions for years on my 68 FJ40 when it was never use in the valley. Because of it's age it was yearly not every two years like newer vehicles. Now get five year registration for $60.

Right on, congrats!

Sounds like the classic route is the way to go, re-smogging Tortuga 2 would be a bit of a hassle.

Yep agree Hagerty. Very affordable and easy. Used them on a 92 Mustang I used to have. It was awesome not having to do emissions.

Thought a vehicle had to be twenty-five years old to be a classic and qualify for copper pldates? Think Hagerty doesn't and will insure but had to be twenty-fives years old for the emissions pass from the state.

All you have to do is carry the classic insurance. It's really easy. I pay 300 per year for my 69 ford and my 71 40. Both are insured for 15k each with no appraisal. Mine is through Geico and they sub it out to I believe Hagerty. Really easy. Also save yourself a lot of headache and time. Go to a offsite DMV. You'll be in and out in 15 mins. You do not have to get the classic copper plates.
