The prices in Boston are terrible. There's a reason why so many are leaving...

They're talking about imposing tolls for anyone entering the Boston much like NYC

Ryan:

The only Chick-Fil-A's in the area are in Burlington and Peabody, so that should help narrow the search.

As far as budget goes. 1000-1200. We basically want someplace where we won't get mugged (at least not too often). The prices we've been finding are pretty close to what rent goes for around here. We're in horse country and it's not cheap. She'll be in class at Emerson (Boston Commons) 3 days a week. I'm not sure yet where I'll be working.

sounds like allston/brighton is the way to go... you wont get mugged.

Ryan, if you can keep your vehicle(s) registered in VA, do so. You won't believe what auto insurance will run you in MA if you register up there. Talk about an eye opener!

Look at the owner rentals on craigslist. The broker listing are mostly just teasers to get you in there. DO NOT PAY a broker's fee.

Auto insurance rates were de-regulated a few months ago. If you have a decent driving record you should be ok for insurance rates. You can aways get an online quote. You'll need MA plates in some neighborhoods in order to get a resident parking sticker. Once you get a few hundred $$$ in tickets you'll switch those plates up fast anyway.

There are a bunch of auto bodyshops in the Allston area for work.

that is the case with allston/Brit area...i had to change over my NY plates to MA to park on street and get the sticker...or if you can find off street parking.

Waltham is close to allston...and as John said there are alot of body shops in that area.

Waltham you dont need a sticker....or even have to change over

x2 on the insurance. My insurance company offered me a better rate after it was de-regulated in April. It's about time...

Hey guys I hate to burst your bubble but if your gonna have a vehicle in boston you definatly want to get it regesterd in MA. And your right its gonna cost ya an arm and a leg, but itll cost you 4x that in towing and parking fines if you dont. (sry thats just the way it goes)

I live in the south end right now, and before that I lived in roxbury crossing on mission hill really near emerson. And I have friends that live all over the city. and honestly there are a lot of cool places to live most of which have previously been mentioned. I would highly suggest Jamaica Plain. Itll be a uber short commute to emerson on the green line, and rent is about 200$ cheaper per month on average from the rest of the city.

Davis square is a blast.

I was there for two years, awesome place to live, and not bad at all for rent, I lived in a 5 bedroom mansion for $500 a month, nat and nate can both attest to that... I'm in Union Square in somerville right now and it's pretty nice there too, again some pretty decent prices for rent. Inman and Central square are gonna be more expensive the closer you get into Cambridge. Stay out of greater boston at all if you ask me, Mission Hill is a pit (sorry nate). Allston is good if you can tolerate drunk idiot BU kids 24/7, Brighton is close but more laid back and residential. My two cents.

both great tips. i forgot about JP... great suggestion. you will see that the farther you get from ye ole redline the higher the rents go...

do let us know where you settle and what you think.

I used to live during the week(and GF still does) at the end of the orange line in JP. Next to the Red line it's the city's other real subway and pretty quick into downtown. Lot's of variety for food, etc. if you don't want to go downtown. Grownup bars, too! Real estate is all over the map as some neighborhoods are more or less gentrified house by house.

But there are some hidden gems. Her place involves walking by a few scary bums near a liquor store but then you're in a small, one way in & out residential area tucked up against an amazing cemetery (Boston for park!).

West Roxbury is pretty cool as well. Not on the T but close in on the commuter rail.

Good luck,

HW

You still haven't :flipoff2:

Watertown is cheaper than surrounding towns, easy bus access to Harvard Square (Redline)
and you'll easily find parking with most apartments.

I'm in the greater Providence area. :flipoff2:
