Cool! Haven't seen a desert tortoise in the wild for years. Too few people will stop and move them from one side to the other. And far too many will aim for them...

I think there is more out there then you relize. We come across them every now and then hunting. Once we found one, and about 10 yards away we found a baby. It took alot not to take that one home.

I volunteered for G&F, they track them to weight them and what not. In the one area about 1-2 square miles were about 10-20. I was shocked, I couldn't believe that there were that many. And this place see's alot of traffic, shooters, 4wheelers. I bet eveyone on this board has driven on the road we were on. There was even a dead shell!

I want to do it agian, I believe in the summer they go out every friday morning to collect them all and weight them. In fact G&F will give you one to adopt, you just can't have dogs or else you have to make an enclosure. Once you do that they will come and look at it and determine if you can have one. I get irrigation so that is also a problem or else I would have one. Growing up we had a few in our back yard, our neighbor had more, they once gave us a few eggs that they found after a monsoon storm, non of the eggs made it.

We are custodian for 2 native tortoise. They have one whole side of our house 50x10 plus 2 caves and a water hole. Lots of grass and a few other desert weeds that that they like to eat, like dandelion. Squirt and Littlefoot are their names. Squirt is about 5" long and Littlefoot is about 12" long. I see tortoise and Gila Monsters from time to time when I'm out in the boonies scouting for deer.

If anyone is interested in becoming a custodian for a desert tortoise go to www.azgfd.com and look up whats required and whats expected of custodians. PLEASE DO NOT ever harvest a tortoise from the wild. Do like Jeremy did and just move them out of harms way, then let them be. Game & Fish have plenty up for adoption.

Oh, I have no clue where Park Links RD is.

Oh it's Links Park Dr. West of the Red Rock exit on I10, you have to get off at the red rock exit and head west about one mile on the frontage road and after you pass the big dirt burm you'll see the entrance to it...It's on google maps just east of Picacho

In the one area about 1-2 square miles were about 10-20.

Don't forget that's 640 - 1,280 acres so while it seems like 1-2 sq miles isn't a lot it's a huge amount.. If you drove around that fence line once at 60mph it would still take over 5 minutes!! Either way, excellent to see and nice of you to lend a hand!!! I've moved eveything you can think of off roads from rattlers to gilas... Any kings I find (close to home) come back to the house and I let em go in my yard... Haven't seen one rattler since I started doing that...
