Where are you folks mounting this? It seems a little heavy to me to just drill a few holes in the inner fender.

Ideas?

Pics?
 
think a buddy mounted it right above the brake booster. Looks like there was plenty of room on the driver side inner fender, and i was even looking at the space between the inner and outer front fender on the driver side. sorry but no pics.
 
I drilled holes in my fender and it has been successfully mounted there for two years. Sorry I dont have any pics but it is on the passenger side behind overflow bottle.

I mounted one using a home built bracket that mounts to the frame holes on the passenger side of the engine bay. The holes contain a captured nut (14mm?) so that the bracket bolts firmly to the frame. The front reinforcing bar attaches to the charcoal cannister bracket (if you have that on your engine).

I'm not a fan of ARB compressors in the engine bay .. I put mine in the place of the bottle jack and been there since 2002 or so ..
 
SROR made a pedestal for me

there are existing threaded holes in the frame on the PS...Here's a pic. In the early days when Jim was starting his business we built and installed sliders at his house, I mentioned, HEY, I need to mount the comp., any ideas? 20min. later we had this thing welded up.

I made a robust little shelf for the ARB comp and aux fuse panel that I bolted to the pass fender ... Didn't want to take up any fender well real estate.

To all the others, GREAT ideas!! I may need to wait till I have welder access again. I like some of the shelves you guys made up.
 
The ARB instructions suggests not to put the compressor in a passenger area due to noise and possible "startling" the driver at the wrong moment when it kicks on to charge the lines. My experience is with the HD model. It can be a little noise when running. It's also easier to access in the engine if your running air hose kit for filling your tires.

Yes, small compressors need clean dry air, if your heart is set on having it in the engine compartment route an intake line to the air cleaner or into the passenger compartment (just like the distributor air line) And when was the last time you saw a clean engine compartment.

The other issue is heat. Those ARB compressors (and pretty much all small compressors) will shut down once they get too hot, from use or engine heat if you are in a hot environment (such as Africa which I think is where you are headed) Much of it has to do with Duty Cycle. Like I told you once before get a 100% duty cycle compressor and you will have less possible problems. The ARB compressors are not 100% duty cycle if I remember correctly. (And I just checked the ARB website and even their Heavy Duty compressor is only 50% which means for every ten minutes it runs it has to be off for ten minutes.)

It is easy to mount it in the back of the rig. You could even put it in the quarter panel. And since you mentioned at one time it's only for airing tires putting it in the passenger compartment is not a problem as it's not going to cycle on and off as it does with an air locker.

For you guys with air lockers a one gallon air tank will pretty much eliminate cycling of your compressor during the day. My compressor might come on once during the day and I am locking and unlocking my front end all the time on a run.

Lots of people run them in the engine compartment and have no problems what so ever, I just prefer it in the back of my rig.

old thread revived here. i got some ideas from this thread so thought i'd show what i did. i just bought a welder (lincon easy mig 180) and i needed my first project. i have a locker in my diff and a compressor sitting on my bench for about 8 months. i though about building a bracket that would bolt on to the frame in the threaded holes but i have a FJ62 so my air cleaner is mounted there unlike on the 60s. i decided to build a bracket for my fire wall and used longer bolts in the holes for the brake line brackets. turned out pretty good for my first welding project i think. i havent welded for about 6 years and never was very good. this welder makes it seem easy!! maybe i can get good now!

I did the same thing. It stayed successfully mounted for about 6 years until the compressor blew an intake valve.

Second time around, I went with the dual compressor model.
