First let me say that removing the throttle body was the first automotive mechanical task I have done in 18 years and it feels like a journey of discovery. I find myself daydreaming about the things that I've read on this board. Thank you all for posting. Without all your wisdom I would never have had the confidence to get myself into the friggin mess I am now in! :flipoff2:

Quick update for newbie data: the second time you take your TB off it takes approximately 1/5 the time of the first time you did it with no instructions.

It seems that removing the TPS was not necessary after all. Those convenient electrical plugs really do come apart quickly. I think I have it adjusted properly (bought a vacum, ohmmeter and feeler gauge). It seems like the baseline reading from the ohmmeter were never what my Haynes book said they should be, but in the end I got the friggin thing within the operating spec.

It also seems like you dont need to unscrew all the nuts on all the cables that are attached to the throttle body. An in fact it would appear that properly adjusting those cables is more than just a passing standard for standards sake.

So all this long windedness leads to the actual question: I think my throttle valve cable is maladjusted. I am having some funky tranny sensations that I dont remember from before the TB cleaning. When I slow down to turn a corner, it seems like their is some pause while downshifting between gears. The engine revs like it is going into neutral, then finally catches and kind of lurches forward. This appears consistent with other folks problems with their throttle valve cable. The Haynes manual has 4 steps that dont really guide me to an actual adjustement... more of an observational type of process. In other posts CDan says I need to punch the accelerator pedal to the floor and make sure that the throttle plate is fully open. Is the throttle plate the butterfly valve inside the throttle body? Any other adjustment metrics to go on?

Thanks,

Chris

Yup, we're here for you pal !!!

Seriously though, this is going from worse to worser! Let's see if we can collectively patch this poor thing up. Anyone recall a step to step approach to adjusting all those things. I do not, not from memory anyway, I'm off to refer to my FSM, I think I can finger it out from that. Hmmmmmm, wait, what is that, a moral to the story, hmmm. Sorry just bustin yer balls is all.

>> my Haynes book <<

You need the FSM.

Later... I see Larry posted a link for you. Thanks Larry!

There have been several posts in the archives on how to adjust the tranny kick down cable. I would search on kick + cable in the 80 section. As I recall, there were some posts with pics & FSM scans. There is a precise adjustment to this cable and the tolerances are in the 1mm range. As I recall, a minor adjustment either way produces noticeable differences in the things that you mentioned. (slowing to a stop and the tranny not shifting, shifting too fast, or staying in neutral.)

If you hit a dead end in the IH8MUD archives then search the SOR archives. I believe Kurt struggled with this adjustment for several days.

Update:

I adjusted the kick cable / throttle valve cable and it did make a difference in the shifting. My cable doesnt look like the cable in those pictures. It is still not as smooth shifting as before so I will make incremental adjustments until it gets back to where it was. Adjusting it is definately less of a PITA than reconnecting that cable with the TB in place. What kind of tension do you feel on the cable (no feet on gas)?

My idle at startup is around 1800 before it drops down to around 800 (in P or N). In D the idle is at +- 650 with no A/C, +- 800 with A/C. In P or N with the A/C on, the revs go up to 1500+. I wonder if my TPS still needs more adjustment? After looking at every post on this board with the word 'idle' in it, I have determined that startup idle between 1100 & 2000 is normal. But the A/C kickin it up to 1500 just feels wrong... but what the hell do I know

Thanks again for your help.

I had this exact same problem last week.

I removed the TB and used 3 cans of cleaner in and on it.

Do a search on my name "lurker" and you will see before and after pics.

It only takes 1.5 hours to do.
