Just installed MOOG tie rod ends less than a month ago. After a couple trips to Hollister off road park and some trails around yosemite national park, the tie rod ends started to rust! When I replaced the OEM ones, they didn't have that much rust on it. I'm actually surprised since I had MOOG tie rods on my 100 series and it didn't rust this quick! (I only had them on my LC100 for 2 months before a drunk driver totaled my car).

I cleaned them out with a wire brush and sprayed them with some corrosion protective spray. I'll be replacing them with OEM parts the next time they wear out or if rusting continues to be a problem. Don't want the rusty tie rods to get stuck on the ends of the steering rack.

The Moog units look just like the Sankei/555 units, and that is likely where they are sourced. They come unpainted. I also recommend adding grease zerks to them, as they are the metal on metal type.

I had the same experience with moog tie rods and other parts on my Montero. I didn’t realize you have to paint them

Fwiw, Moog does often (but not always) re-box 555 Japanese joints. They will need to be painted post install.

Does the Cruiser Outfitters 100 series kit come with new cotter pins? Will I need to purchase any other parts not included in the kit to do the job (other than tools)?

All included, cotter pins, new OE jam nuts, etc.

What the heck? I just looked at my 555 and noticed they looked rusty too. Looked on here and saw this. Ugh. If left unpainted, is that going to cause issues or just cosmetic pain?

Simply cosmetic. You could wipe them with some paint prep or brake clean and bomb them right on the vehicle too.

Will do, as long it lasts, great!
