Mojave Road over Thanksgiving Weekend

So, instead of heading down and camping at rock springs, we took Cedar Canyon road to Black Canyon and camped at Midhills Campground for the night. We threw some steaks on the fire for Thanksgiving Dinner and hung out. In the morning, we called it good and headed for the freeway. It was a fun, memorable trip, and I'll definitely head back soon.

Tom, awesome rig. You did a fantastic job. Seeing you in Mid-Hills cemented my desire to start the build-out of my 100. Hope all the ruckus in my site didn't keep your crew awake.

My wife is still amazed that eight of you packed into the truck. Bravo!

Jim

Jim, it was great to see you and your nice family at Mid-Hills. My wife is now convinced that Mudders can detect each other from a mile away. If your little ones made any noise, I sure didn't hear it over my own kids. Your 100 is going to make a primo trail rig. We'll have to tackle MR together some time.

Well, I hate to admit it we but ended up only doing the first leg of Mojave Road, bailing out at Watson Wash (mile 49.5). I had a great time, but the 100 series was feeling top heavy loaded down with two adults and six kids, and all our gear. The fact that we were going solo on our first trip off pavement in a vehicle with the suspension installed by her desk jockey husband understandably bothered my wife. She actually had her own Toyota 4x4 when she was single (19 years ago) and had done plenty of trail riding, but it was always part of a group and without kids along for the ride. At the end of day one, we decided to call it a good dry run and plan to come back as part of a bigger group.

The stretch over the Piute Range was a little more technical than I had described to my wife. Not that it was some major obstacle, but for our experience level it took a bit of effort to chose the right line. The drop off on the driver's side was also steeper than expected. The kids were screaming in mock (I think mock) terror. By the time we reached the summit her nerves were shot.

When we stopped a little later at the schoolbus, I noticed that there was a slight drip of oil from the steering rack, which had been replaced just a few days before. I wasn't too concerned, and figured it could wait until we got home, but it began nagging at the back of my mind.

As we drove through the Lanfair Valley, an intermittent rut developed on the south side of the road. Straddling the rut exposed the driver's side to heavy pin striping from the Joshua Trees, Yucca and cacti which I was reluctant to do. Driving off camber with the heavy load on the roof rack made all occupants convinced we would tip over. I tried to strike a balanced approach, but by the time we reached Watson's Wash my wife's unease at taking this trip solo was beginning to prevail.

Watson's Wash itself looked a lot worse and more eroded than I had seen in any posted video.

Well Tom that's a bummer you didn't make it a bit farther, understand though with all the kids and such. Better to be on the cautious side of things if you ever want to go back again with mom and the kids......

Mojave Rd Report

Great trip, weather was perfect, no wind (yes hardly a breeze) high 60's. I was prepared for mid 30's at night but my guess was low 40's maybe into high 30's....

We got to needles on Friday at 11am filled the jeep and two 5gal gas cans and proceeded straight to MR. We had the book and were reading Dennis's instructions but took a couple wrong turns and had a couple false starts before we found the right trail. But once we were on it we never lost it all the way to afton. Spent the first night in cruthers canyon, what a beautiful spot... About 5k in elevation so it was cool but not freezing

More MR talk

Lava tubes.....stayed there next night. I thought the road was very tame... In fact I never even put in in 4 wheel drive!! No lockers needed, just put it in low at a couple of places... With all the recent rains there was no soft sand, it was all pretty well packed in. Couple little climbs but pretty straight forward otherwise. I was worried about getting lost, but even that was no issue. That Mojave road book is the way to go... As long as you have a navigator and you zero out your odometer every where your good to go... I can't wait to go back and go more off line and see more stuff.... We skirted around the dry lake, because it wasn't dry it was a mud hole!!

The whole road was cool, but I really liked the place at the end xyzzy road, that place was a total trip!!!! Walked all around it, what a history!! Like an abandoned hotel resort out of the 50's

Lots of these long road shots, you never get tired of watching them. I took some cool video but I can't figure how to load more than one pic at a time probably can't get a vid on....lol
I'll go read the directions.... Ha ha

Lava tube cave shot... Boy was I glad I got the ten gallons of extra gas... The ole JK sucked it up, definitely needed it, wouldn't suggest going with out any extra on the truck... Unless you had some little gas miser pick up....

Gary, great report and pics! I'll get back out there and finish it up soon. Your report is helping me persuade the powers that be.
