The 100 Series Ring gear is not bigger in terms of OD, It is slightly bigger in terms of gear width. See attached picture. The 80 ring gear bolts though with bolts and nuts on the flange, whereas the 100 series bolt into the gear.

Technically, the greater width means a given force applied to the gear is distributed over a larger area does it not? I would take this to mean a 100 gear is stronger than an 80 gear. I'm not sure how much of a difference this translates to in the real world though. It may be irrelevant for most drivers but probably important in Moab etc.

Off topic (sorry) but...Christo, any preliminary pics of those step sliders yet?? I will be buying in a cpl months.

Yes, the teeth are bigger, however I doubt the ring gear would be the first to break. Most people with 80's and large tires tend to break the rear axles and/or twist them before the ring gear breaks.

Now the 100 has larger axles, so yes, they might hold and the ring gear might break first, but with the size tire you can fit, I would not be worried.

If you want to regear, that 80 swap is about the only thing that will work. We are looking at what would be involved with doing a 80/100 e-locker hybrid to enable the use of a 80 ring gear for the 100 with e-lockers. Or previous one was with ARB's.

So it can be regeared, it just takes $'s.

They are still all on a pallet. We made 1 set for the 100 series but they are sold. I will try to get pics before it is shipped. Otherwise pics on a 80 series will have to work.

Wish List and skid plate

Put me down for one skid plate too please!

Other than that I wish they made a stout rear bumper without the tire carrier.

I'm with your data Mr. Slee. When my lockers were installed I was told because the gear was bigger (I see know they meant thicker/wider whatever) and the fact it had more splines, they said it was notably stronger. They focused on the more spline thingy. Are they correct about the splines aiding toughness?

Regarding the skid plate, the materials are steel, the plate will bolt off for oil changes. Price? Not for sure until we make a prototype. It'll cost at least $500... maybe $600? Not 100% sure.

I can tell you the Taco ones are extremely beefy. They cover up the rack and pinion. If Slee or Hanna have an alternative, I'd be willing to listen to their ideas also. I hit a rock with my stock Taco plate which crushed it badly. My buddy hit the same rock and just scratched his...

Wow, I was expecting under 300, but I have never bought a skid plate so I really had no idea what to expect. In that price range I will have to move the skid plate from my "want now" category into my "eventually" category. But please keep me updated if you do build a prototype, some pics of one installed just may change my mind.

I'm guessing they won't be ready for some time as I have to take the truck in to be measured, etc. This means that everyone who is interested will have time to save up. And before you are asked to commit, you will see a prototype.

Maybe I will set a goal of Jan. 06 if others are interested? Christmas present maybe?

I know this will be a back burner type thing as they are currently getting ready to produce bumpers and sliders, etc. for the new Tacoma. Demello made the sliders for the 05 SEMA Donahoe Racing Tacoma, so those are already in production.

As a matter of fact, they have a new 4 door 05 on order and the Solid Axle Swap will happen BEFORE the truck has been driven more than a few miles.

Normally, more splines on an axle, for example, means the axle is larger. In most cases, individual splines are the same size on different axles no matter the spline count, so if there are more of them to go around the circumfrence on one axle, the circumfrence must be larger to accomodate them.

I'm not sure if this is always the case, but when you are talking about the same manufacturer (Toyota vs. Toyota), I think it's pretty accurate.

Another obvious benefit of more splines is you have the driving force balanced over more area, which aids in strength and durability.

More cupholders. 9 just isn't enough.

I count... two in the front console, two in the center console flip-up compartment, two in the rear of the center console, two in the third row. That's only eight! Damnit, did Toyota cheat me out of a cupholder???????????

The 04 doesn't have the single flip out one in the back on the driver's side?

You got gyped! (nothing derogatory against gypsies here)

Oh yeah, now I know what you're talking about. Third row, right? On the passenger side there is that dual cupholder pocket, but they're so close together I just consider that one holder, but I guess technically it's two. And I do have the flip out one on the driver's side. So yeah, I guess I DO have all nine! Whew, was beginning to think I had bought a crappy, under-equipped truck... ;)

Here's my list in the order I want to do the build-up:

-4 inch lift
-35's
-4.88 gears
-Truetrac LSD's front and rear
-Slee's new step slider
-Heavy duty front skid plate
-Front bumper that will will hold a Ramsey RE12000 worm drive winch
-Slee rear bumper without tire carrier
-Modified tire carrier under the vehicle that pulls it up out of the way better and covered with a skid plate to protect the spare tire

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Don't want much do ya Greg? :D
Let me knowwhen you get it built that way. We'll trade. :)

What would be the advantage of the TruTrac over staying with the stock TC or a ARB air locker ?

Do the Tire Carier mod first with a good write up. :D This seems like a really original idea and I think it would be popular if possible.

Well, Shotts said it was a "Wish List" so I threw the Truetrac's in there. The reason I like them is they are gear driven, well built and strong and have very few parts to fail (no airlines or electical connections). Also, because they are a limited slip design, they are very smooth on road. The sweetest thing about them is that they can be activated by brake modulation. On a 100 with traction control, they activate automatically because the TC uses brake modulation to slow the spinning wheel. This in turn causes the Truetrac to kick in and give traction. It works really well on LR Discovery series II, which uses a similar design. The only problem is, they aren't made for a 100, and because of small market, I doubt they ever will be. I've already contacted Tractech and Quaiffe and neither company has plans to build a LSD for the 100. So, I'll probably go with ARB's when the gears are available.

As far as the tire carrier goes, I'm thinking about working on that and a set of cargo drawers for the rear this spring/summer. The design in my head so far is to build a cage that bolts to the frame and then have the skid plate hinged at the front so that the plate can drop down to remove the spare from the rear. Once I start building, I'll post some pics. Any of you vendors out there want to build something like that, I'd be interested. That way, I don't have to spend a lot of time fabbing one up.
