Every wally world I've ever walked into has 5qt jugs of M1 0w-30 AFE for around $23. No trouble sourcing it AFAIC. It's great stuff...

What about at that gas station in po-dunk Blanding? :D

I've got no problems with whatever anyone runs in their rigs. I just don't see any benefit(s) to running any other weight vs. manuf recommended weight. And MPG? Hogwash. You could take a #2 and get the same difference in mileage. Meaning you'll earn yourself a nice pretty penny every other fill up. :D

Can't speak for the sodamart in Blanding. :p

This can be drawn out into a big debate about oil weight, but I think the BITOG forum is a better venue for that kind of nitpicking. Long story short, I live where it gets mighty cold and like the fact that a 0W oil flows better at startup. Might not make a huge difference from 10W30, but it's just like the whole fuel economy aspect of it...I don't run it for noticeable mileage gains. The price is the same and the performance is the same, so why not?

That may be a benefit. Although my folks are regularly starting their vehicles at -30 with no issues on 5w-30 dino. Battery was the bigger issue.

BTW, the mpg comment wasn't aimed at you.

No worries. My point was more along the lines of "every little bit helps...even if it just makes you feel better."

I live somewhere where the temperature stays between 60-70 degrees most of the time. But I've noticed that with the 0w30 I start getting the normal 15-17mpg on the highway sooner than i did with the 5w30. And if most of your trips are short, that could add up. (although I switched the T-cases to mobil1 synthetic 79w90 at the same time, which is probably explaining the slightly better fuel economy more than the engine oil.)

I think Toyota recommended 5w30 because 0w30 synthetic wasn't as available at the time they printed the manual. I gotta find a cheaper walmart. I paid $26 for a 5qt at the Culver City Walmart. Wally worlds just aren't the same in LA...:frown:

I wonder what the sweet spot is between the M1 0w and 5w oils for actually making a difference in mpg's. I would guess that it has to be sub zero temps for the 0w to actually result in a fuel economy savings.

My guess is the MPG advantage is at the other end. 0w-30 probably has a viscosity at operating temp on the low side of the acceptable range for 30. Probably pretty close to their 0w-20.

M1 5w-30 is already pretty low in the range. M1 High Mileage and SUV are higher in the range.
