Moab trail advice for a newbie

Pretty much just stay away from BFE, Pritchet, Moab Rim and Rusty Nail. Behind the Rocks, Metal Masher and Golden Spike are maybes, I would guess you could get thru them with no issues. If you do run Behind the rocks, make sure you don’t go down to White Knuckle hill. Everything else in Moab is easy and fair game, big cool optional obstacles all over the place :D

I had just been through Moab this past September. I went on two trails with my Titan, Pritchett and Cane Creek Canyon. Pritchett was a nightmare, but I got through in one piece, but with a dent in the rear bumper, torn off license plate bracket, and a clunking noise in the front end that i now believe is a broken something in my front diff. Kane Creek Canyon was a piece of cake. I heard there are some places where someone will look at your vehicle and then give you a list of trails they recommend. If you are ever in a bind, go to NAPA. Those guys will actually help you fix any boo boos in their parking lot. The cashier was helping a guy replace a diff on a Defender 90 when I went to pick up some oil. Moab is the Shiznit!

Short trip report

It didn’t go as planned but it was still great fun. We wound up leaving Thursday morning early and got into Moab early afternoon, raining. It had been raining the day before as well. Spent some time at Arches visitor center then looked for camping spots along the river/hwy 128. Not finding any to our liking we decided to camp at the Arches campground. Setting up camp in the dark and rain 2 kids and a dog but had turkey and dressing warmed in the camp oven.

Friday we spent a lazy morning around camp and hiked up to delicate Arch and petroglyphs. We drove out Willow springs road had lunch and made it to Sand Flats Rec area late in the afternoon. After driving by Hells Revenge trail entrance, my wife said no, so we did some more recon and decided to find a moderate trail rating in the Wells book. We decided to do the Tower Arch trail on Sat. morning and then hopefully Hells in the afternoon if we/she were confident in the rig.

Sat. morning we went out onto the trail and I have to say it was the most challenging driving I have done so far, yeah I know nothing compared to what others do but it was good for me and especially my wife to get confidence, especially seeing how were alone out there. She even drove some of that last of the trail which included a steep sandy section with a large hole to straddle. The kids loved seeing mom drive that section and so did I. Route was Salt Valley Road to Tower Arch to eye of the whale arch to Willow Flats road. By the time we were done there was not time for Hells. Sunday morning packing up camp and left for home.

So, looking forward to the next long weekend we can make it out there. Thanks again for all the input. Here are a few pics.

Thanks for the follow up. I've never done the trail you did, but if the pics are representative, you are in for a major surprise when you go back. That's a perfect warm up for Fins and Things.:D

Do not run Hell's until you run Fins. Especially if your wife is along. Your truck looks well set up so you can handle just about anything out there with more seat time.

That Fin at the start of Hells can open a unaware eye really fast but its a great trail, like driving on velcro....

The entrance to Hells is a eye opener but it really is an AWSOME trail! When you go back I demand you do it! Haha. like calstyl2 said like driving on velcro. I have seen in books that Hells is rated a 8 or 9 of 10 but if you do all the bypasses or avoid the more challenging routs I would rate it a moderate trail or 5 or 6. Glad you had a fun trip! If you want to get some more time behind the wheel look me up I'm in denver my friends and I can get you some trail runs in and give you all the pointers you need.

I think I will try it along with Fins next time. I was really hoping to try them but it didn't work out. It was still a great family trip. The kids got way more into the off road stuff than I thought they would.

I just may look you up! Do you guys post your runs on the local club site? I have been meaning to hook up with the guys down here but really haven't had a chance yet...too busy

Drool! I was in Moab last September and would have loved some offroading. White rim trail in Canyonlands seems to be really neat and easy. I could only watch it from above (Island in the sky) and I want to go back there asap!

Here's some pics of me and the wife trailing in Moab...

Not sure if this is Pritchett or Kane Canyon. My wife thought I was nuts. The Titan handled the slick rocks well with a bit of maneuvering and brake use. A true-trac would have helped a lot. I really need to get around to installing that damned thing, lol.
