I have a chance at a OEM snorkel. I have heard that they are illegal in MN but in reading the MN website, I can't find a definitive answer. I know there are a few locals here and was hoping to get an answer. Thanks!

Do you mean that OEM snorkels are illegal or that all snorkels are illegal?
Who writes these assinine laws anyway.
Is a snorkel an indicator of terrorist tendencies, or maybe something commonly used by child molestors?
Write your legislators and tell them to bother with things that they understand.
Woo Hoo!

I don't live in MN, but the only reason I could think of is some legal interpretation that a snorkel obstructs the windshield.

Hasn't resulted in mass mayhem yet, but you never know when someone's going to get his panties in a wad over something like that on your truck...:censor:

But this is the first time I've ever heard of this.

Time to move to Texas!

I can't imagine that snorkels would be No Go up there. Just look at any Isuzu NPR or cab-over chevy, they have a snorkel mounted right behind the cab.

The way I see the law written is if you drive your vehicle into a designated trout stream and you have a snorkel on your truck, they can increase the fine. But I can't see if they are actually illegal or not. There are so few designated trout streams in MN, and I fish them all so I'm comfortable that I won't make that mistake. I can just see getting the thing on my truck, then getting pulled over and tickited. It would be nice if the state had someone you could call and get an answer. For what it's worth, I have not seen a single DD in MN with a snorkel. Makes me wonder...

I new a kid that went to school at MN State, in Mankato that had a snorkel he was from out East not 100% sure where. I don't think the police gave him any trouble? But that might have been because he had out of state plates?

Try calling your local police department or look up MN State Patrol and just call and ask.

That law really sounds really goofy, but blue laws are not unheard of. Why would they fine you more for having a snorkel versus not having one? Truck in river versus truck in river breathing from a higher elevation??

Are you planning on scuba diving or using a canoe or what? Your 80 probably doesn't make much of a watercraft anyway.
If you're just fording the creek on a legal trail, I can't see how any of this applies to your truck. If you're fishing from your truck:confused:

Either that, or MN has laws more stupid than the ones around here, which is saying a lot.

Contact Poser on Mud. I do believe they are illegal. It has to do with possiable intent to play in water land areas. I remember finding that this law was a bit out of line. But law are laws, it some time makes no reason to us.

My research on Google and reading the Minnesota legal code leads me to believe that snorkels over 6 inches above the original intake are illegal on ATV's but not on off-road vehicles (like Jeeps or Cruisers). An effort to spread the ban to off-road vehicles was killed in 2004.

The state laws have specific definitions for ATV, off-highway vehicle, off-road vehicle, off-highway motorcycle, and so on. It gets a little muddy, but looks like snorkels are not banned from Cruisers .

HTH

6 yrs on MN roads with my snorked 'n' lifted 80, no problemo.
And I'm sure it was spotted by more than a few "peace" officers
as there's not to many of "us" around here and most people just
stare with that look of what the he!! on there face. Fun times!

Illegal. But I have never known anyone to get ticketed for it. But like was said above if you had one and got caught in a body of water around here it would just addd to your ticket.

Hey Mike, how did you find out it is illegal? Can you direct us to a resource or the specific law that says it is illegal? That would help a lot.

Like I said, my reading of the actual laws, as well as a brochure put out by the state of MN, makes me think this only applies to ATV's.

If you're Staying the Trail, I kind of doubt there would be an issue. If you're not, then you're probably in trouble even without a snorkel:rolleyes:

The comment about on-road registered vehicles NOT being defined as ORVs -- and thus not covered by the "snorkel ban" -- seems to make the most sense to me. Cops are often pretty confused about things other than giving you a hard time -- and admittedly some things people do tend to set off such reactions, although apparently it's not relied on as an excuse by those who behave professionally when doing their job.

I can see that someone might think one of those little 4x4 things might somehow creep through ponds and marshes where they shouldn't. In reality, this seems like a law mostly in search of some politician's fevered imagination of a non-existent problem. Get real. An ATV is not a submarine, no matter how long the snorkel might be.

Of course, maybe this is just a rumor being spread by people reading and misinterpreting the law themselves and no one's actually ever been pulled over in their Land Cruiser for it? Crazier urban legends exist.

Call your local state rep's office and ask them the question.

One person who might know for sure and who is Mud member, is Poser, he is in Farmington, MN and has a shop that does anything and everything Cruiser related. Send him a PM.

Good to know there is a Cruiser resource in Farmington.

I live in MN and frequent our trout streams. There is a DD heep in my neighborhood with a snorkel.

I think you and I need to talk fishing sometime because I have not been to trout water around here that would require a snorkel. If there is some...I am going to the wrong places.

I am not saying Steve won't know anything different than me. But I do a little about the DNR and 4x4 rules seens as how I was once president of the MN4WDA and have been involved in 4 wheeling here for 15+ years.

Plus honestly I think its a good law. People should be stopped from putting snorkels on perfectly fine 80's.;)

on public lands or public waters with an air-intake pipe that is more than six inches above the manufacturer's original air-intake pipe;

Was from the bill. But it didn't pass. I am trying to dig up where it got put in as I thought it had. But maybe I am wrong on this and it didn't pass.

ATVs may not be operated with a snorkel device that has a raised air intake six
inches or more above the manufacturer’s original air intake. Exception: ATVs with
snorkel devices may be operated within the Iron Range OHV State Recreation Area
and other designated public OHV recreation areas.

OHVs and Wetland Disturbance
A person may not operate an OHV in a manner to:
• indicate a willful, wanton, or reckless disregard for the safety of persons
or property
• carelessly upset the natural and ecological balance of a wetland or public
waters wetland
• impact a wetland or public waters wetland in excess of minimum amounts
established under law.

Where You May NOT Ride
Also see specific sections for additional restrictions.
You may not operate an off-highway vehicle:
• on the median of a four-lane highway
• within the right-of-way of any interstate highway or freeway
• on the right-of-way between opposing lanes of traffic
• on grant-in-aid snowmobile trails
• on designated non-motorized trails
• at airports
• below the ordinary high-water level of unfrozen public waters that are lakes,
streams, rivers, and certain wetlands, or in calcareous fens
• on any frozen public waters where you don’t have legal access or where it is
prohibited
• in any area restricted by local ordinances or municipalities, including streets
• in a tree nursery or planting area on state forest lands that are posted or
designated closed to motorized uses (see pages 19-23)
• on agricultural land without permission (see page 26)
• in most state parks, state recreation areas, state historic sites, wildlife
management areas*, state scientific and natural areas with the exception of
posted trails and areas.

Basically a snorkel on an ATV is illegal and operating anyplace you would need a snorkel in Minnesota is illegal since all water in MN is public. So you make the call as far as I can find there is nothing specifically that says it is illegal at this point.
