How does the width of 80's minitruck axles and Fj40 axles compare?

40 axles are too narrow. If you want the beef of the LandCruiser axle, you need to use FJ-60 axles. Also, the mini has a centered rear diff. the "60" is offset. There are some aftermarket people building centered diff Cruiser rear axles. The price is reasonable.

I am putting a set of 60 axles under my 62 40. So in the end I will have a set of 40 axles with a centered rear end that will need a home. Just thinking way ahead and probably too much.

Cool, Thank you! Sounds like the differential would be more centered with the 40 axles(about 2 5/8"). Does that mean that the spring perch on the passenger side would not have to be notched out for the differential when converting to the mini's SOA? Are the pick-up's frames wider than the 40's in the front?

It depends on the vintage of mini truck. For the '79 - '85 solid front trucks, the axles are very near the same width as the FJ40. With IFS beginning in '86, the truck Wheel Mounting Surfaces (WMS) spread out about 3 inches for both front and rear. I doubt you are interested in the IFS front axle, but the rear will be very near the width of the FJ60. I have all these axles available for exact measurements and am interested to know, but my fanny hasn't been motivated to go do it!

The early straight axle mini and 40 frames are about the same at the front ~27" center to center. The front of the mini frame tapers, the 40 doesn't, at the rear shackle hanger the mini is ~29" center to center. The springs mount slightly wider on the mini, ~29" mini and 27" on the 40 center to center.

I have a 40 (IIRC '73) and a mini ('83) short side axles here, the 40 shaft is 2" longer.

I am thinking about the 79-85 mini's. As I am writing this though, I am realizing that if I got a hold of one, I would be pulling off the mini axles to put on the much older, drum brake, course spline, 40 axles. I would bet that someone could find a use for the mini axles though. Suzuki guys come to mind.

the mini truck and 40 front axles are the same width. Never measured the rear but expect the same. The Mini trunk long side front axle shaft is shared with the FJ60 (~2 5/8" longer than the 40 ) while the short side is about 2 5/8" shorter than the 40 short side

Wrong.

40/45/55 are all the same
Mini is 1.5 inches wider than 40/45/55
60/62 is 3" wider than 40/45/55

UNLESS you have a V6 Mini rear in which case its the same width as 60/62

BUT since the V6 never same on SFA there are NO mini fronts the same width as 40/45/55/60/62

Hope that makes sense and helps.
