Hi everyone,

Any of you own a mini might Dremel? I am wondering if this tool fits inside the airbox. I have a TJM snorkel and with heavy rains it collects water inside the grid of the airbox. Today I tried using my normal sized dremel to create a channel for water to evacuate towards the drain hole but I couldn't fit the tool going longwise (length of car). My neighbor -a SouthAfrikan- claims this is a common mod done there for vehicles going in the "bush". Makes great sense.
With rain coming and future winter snowy transgressions I really want to change this in my my airbox (still don't see the purpose of a grid, strength? Not needed there).

Here's the link ( if inclined) to see my problem:

Scroll to bottom of page, not a ton of water but I would rather have that drained.

Thanks

82 views and crickets lol.
I guess no one here has an issue with water collecting in the box. Hmm well if anyone has a suggestion different than a small dremel please let me know. I'm thinking now of using a soldering tool to melt a line on the grid but that seems to be last resort.
Shameless bump

Do you need the mini one? Would something like this work for that?

Ok thanks, that would be the one I suppose. I don't own a compressor tho. Gives me an excuse to buy one I guess. My original idea was to spend veery little. ($25) and buy the mini dremel : http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003TU0XFU/?tag=ihco-20

So I was wondering if anyone here owns one and could measure if it would fit, my regular sized dremel does not, so I don't see a point on having both (if the mini doesn't fit) if that makes any sense.

Thanks for the suggestion tho.

Oh I see, that would have been great but I can tell from the pic it won't work. It's still the same length as the dremel. I need something not longer than 4 inches to fit inside the airbox, thanks again! Great tool tho.

Have you thought about why toyota might have designed it that way? What is the problem with a bit of water down there?

If there is water that gets in there, it gets separated by the grid pattern and stays in smaller amounts, preventing sloshing. The drain hole is present to allow slow drainage out and prevents quick infill if submerged for extended period of time. If you are under water that long and that deep where these features become irrelevant, you likely have significant other problems- electronics, sensors etc.

So as I stated in the beginning, what's the harm with a little water in the bottom of the box? When it becomes so much that it is higher than the grids, it will drain as designed.

Each part toyota makes has a purpose and undoubtedly has some function that has considered

@Jordan345

You know, what you wrote makes sense. I may have been influenced by the neighbor and his call to action. At the time I had the drain hole plugged and perhaps that assisted in the accumulation.
I'm gonna go with your suggestion and Toyotas infinite wisdom on design, I mean...we are talking Toyota engineering and not GMs!

I didn't read through the other thread...just stared at your photo...how is the water getting in there? Through your snorkel? Can't you just turn your intake horn around to face the rear of the truck when it's raining?

It's a jdm snorkle you can't turn it around. I do like it better than the "option" looks wise. I think I'm over it. Now that I've unplugged the box I'm ok. It's one of those times when you just want to wrench without thinking it thru.

Lol. I get that. Ok. Just wondering cause I'm in the market for a snorkel at some point but I don't want one if the rain is going to be an issue

Well water issues aside (operators fault lol) I really like the looks and build of the JDM. I like its integration to the line of the vehicle and it's a solid construction. There's no humming or buffeting and Ivd experienced a slight increase in mpgs.
Looks more up to date modern than the other offerings IMHO ymmv.
