My 98' 100 series has only 49,549 miles on it and they say to replace the timing belt at around 90,000 miles.Since the truck is almost 9 years old come this april, should i have the timing belts checked out or wait till 90,000 miles which could be another 7 to 8 years or so.Will the belt last that long or is it prudent to just go ahead and have it changed....

Welcome! Wait and see what the real experts say....though I'd not change it until 80K like I did. I do things early when possible.
I thought it was 6 years or 90k whichever comes first.

It's long over due for a change. I had a 99 that I had 58K miles on last year 9/05 and had it changed along with the water pump. The belt needed to be changed cracked and frayed and the water pump was seeping. If I were you I would not wait any longer then it takes you to make the appt.
I'm not in as big a hurry as SWUtah. I would at least wait till I got the coupon deal of the month from my Toyota dealer.
Factors to consider. Climate and whether or not the truck has been garaged. The SW heat and dryness are hard on rubber. Years do matter for rubber parts. How does your accessory belt look ? Has it ever had new tires ?

I changed mine at 6yrs and had 110K miles on it; I have a friend who works for Lexus and he always told me how good a shape those belts come off at 90K. Remember, Toyota aims way on the safe side. My belt was in pretty good shape. But then again I pamper my baby!

My dealer, which is known for performing PM not called for in the owners manual like a front engine teardown and removal of the t-belt to inspect the water pump weephole and reshimming valves at 60K mi, recommends 105K for the 2UZ, but only 75K for the V6 (RX) since they say the 2UZ is really easy on the belt while the V6 is extra harsh on it. FYI, the recommended interval for the V6 is also 90K, so that's just toyota's nominal value.
I guess he could be the test mule for time interval and just wait until he gets 90K miles or it breaks? He would be the first one that had reported a broken timeing belt and we could all learn from his experience

When you look at the Toyota maintanence tables it is clear that they start as a standard list without regard for model or design and are later adjusted when warranty problems show areas that need more frequent PM.
I think you are safe to stretch it to the 9 year mark like the newer model tables indicate.

1999 LC.....Is there R&R manual-like instructions on changing the accessory belt tensioner or anyone that can point me in the right direction with a link? 1999 LC with a new timing belt (not by me) but after 2 months the accesory belt T bearing went. Looks easy to do but can't find any DYI info.
can i just say thank you for the info in miles that you provide because whilst there's some good forums over here, you guys seem to have nailed the main issues.
here's me thinkin my 115k kms is big, but nothing compared to a lot of you so thanks again!
