I'm going to use up a little of my use-it-or-lose-it vacation time to do some Class VI trail scouting out in the western part of NH. Basically hoping to find some new & different Class VI trails that we could use for a future Fall Gathering. I did the same thing last year and found some really great trails - but they were a little too far away (and the ones that were closer were boring).

I'm thinking about going Tues. & Wed. of either the first or second week of August and will probably start in or around Acworth.

I've got a winch, but I don't own a chain saw -- which can be a problem when your scouting. Plus, I prefer not to be out on unexplored trails by myself.

If anyone (with our without a chainsaw) is interested and/or able to join me, let me know.

I could do the second week of august and I have a chainsaw. Might even have a winch on the FJC by then also..

I live across the river near Springfield. We did alot of wheeling in the Acworth area about 30 years ago. Stay away from Walpole as it is getting pretty built up. I know that there are some roads in Acworth and Alstead, but that area is also getting built up also. Northern Unity- Claremont-Cornish has a real nice long loop.(good intermediate,FJC freindly) Dave and I may use that in our fall run. We are going to do some scouting in the next couple of weeks and we have talked about wednesday afternoons. Gary

Count me in. I have a chainsaw. Spoke with Marlin today and it sounds like I should get my "Lefty" before then.

How do you find the class 6 roads? Visit to the Town office to get the list of roads from them?

I belong to "ExploringNH.com." We have lists & maps of NH Class VI's and our members work with the local road agents to *try* and keep our lists updated.

That doesn't always yield the best results... So we do a lot of scouting and then post reports.

Please keep me (us) posted if you and Dave get out before the 10th/11th... Would love to know what towns/trails you hit.

I'll PM you WRT "the loop" (I think I know the one you are referring to) and tell you what I found last year.

Update...

There a few people coming on this scouting run from across a few different forums. If you are still planning on joining me, it would be helpful if you would PM me your preferred email address so I can send questions and final details to everyone via email. (Please include your cell phone number too, even if you think I already have it.)

In addition, please let me know if you plan to run with us on BOTH Tues. and Wed. (or just one of those days).

If I am reading things correctly.... NET4R2004 (unfortunately, Steve just let me know his truck won't be ready in time) and srp-toy are "in" from this forum so I'll be watching for PMs from both of you.

Thanks,

-dave

LATEST UPDATE: The list of participants has dwindled down to me plus one other person on Tues. Looks like I'll be running alone on Wed.

So, if anyone else wants to jump in at the last minute (especially on Wed.) there's certainly room.

A big thanks to Sean ("srp-toy") for coming out with me today... We covered 15 (30+ miles of) trails in and around Acworth...

I'll share the scouting reports with Dave and Gary for the upcoming Fall Foliage Run.

If anyone is "suddenly available" to hit some more trails with me tomorrow, let me know.

Had a great time up in NH. Some real good trails and it was really nice meeting you. We will have to catch up again soon so you can show me some more NH wheeling.
Hope you had a good day scouting today.

Sean
