I was driving off-road today and noticed an intermittent sound. I haven't noticed it before because I generally drive with the windows up, and the sound doesn't happen all the time. It would come and go and seemed to be cyclical with the wheel going round. I noticed it and got to a point where I could turn around, but it stopped after that. Any idea on what it is or if it is bad?

I recently noticed that my breaks make a sound for the first 5 minutes or so when I start driving for the day. Not sure if this is related or an issue in its own right.

Thanks for looking.

Sounds like a rock stuck between your brake disc and dust shield.

^ what he said! Odd that it is intermittent. I'd jack the wheels up and check for play etc just to be sure. Done a bearing y service lately? May be good time to tackle that. But sounds tinny like brake shield for sure!

I had a similar issue, intermittent "grinding" ( more like a metal on metal sliding)at low speeds. One of my exhaust shields was resting lightly on my drive shaft. Very annoying, fairly harmless, but what a relief.

What @ccasteel said, I had that exact same terrible screeching noise occur when a piece of gravel got stuck between the disc and dust shield in the rear. When I took it in to the shop to get it checked out the mechanic took my wheel off and kind of shook the shield and it fell out. It actually ground the rough gravel down to a smooth stone, it blew both of us away...

Had something similar and it was the brake pad anti-rattle spring making contact with the rotor.

Same thing happened to me except mine was a sea shell.

the sound started at .26 which was before he was moving; I'd say Mr. Dingledong has it right.

Well, I drove around some more today and didn't hear the sound again. This is the first time I live in a place that has a garage, but I don't have any tools yet. I did look around under that side of the vehicle but didn't notice anything...

I looked up a video on "bearing repack" and, man, it looked complicated as far as time/tools are concerned. I'm still moving around every 6 - 12 months so buying and moving a bunch of tools is daunting. I was kinda hoping that the LC would be a buy-it-and-forget-it-except-for-maintenance sort of thing. I did switch from a low mileage Corolla before this so I was used to just oil change maintenance which is probably skewing my expectations. How often do you folks do "garage work" to your LCs? Once a month? 4 times a year?

@smithytailor How many miles are on your 100? Depending on how you drive, a LC is a buy-it-and-drive-it proposition. Most of us do "garage work" on our cars because we enjoy it. And we may work them a little harder than the average owner. Thus requiring some added maintenance. I've only had my LX470 for just under 15,000 miles and it has 147,000 miles on it. I bought it because I expect it to have very little required maintenance aside from the problems I cause.

That said however, I did have the heater T's blow a week ago, and had to replace them. I since found out this is a known achilles heel and should have been replaced when the timing belt was done. There are probably a few others, and I haven't searched yet, but I imagine there's a thread in the FAQ's that covers basic issues to look for as preventative maintenance. Good luck. You won't regret the choice of a Land Cruiser.

if the noise went away and you do not have further issues, it was likely a rock lodged between your rotor and guard and it fell off. If you just remove the wheel and have a look around the perimeter of the guard you may just find some evidence of this but even if you don't as long as you're not noticing further issues, I'd leave it alone. You were after-all driving over rocky terrain.

I just hit 190k. I'm hoping to not get myself into a position where sliders would be nice. However, I still might get sliders as a "stupidity" measure. I'm going to try to avoid the harder trails and lines unless I end up liking the work and find people to travel with.

I need to check on those heater T's, starter/contacts, and my suspension is original so that could use replacing. I know my 200k miles service stuff is coming up so need to check on that some more...

Oh, and by the way, I appreciate the feedback and help you all have given. Many thanks.

Check this place out for space, a lift and tools. Used a similar garage here in Denver to replace LCA.
I had very few automotive skills before buying my 100. As @ccasteel stated I bought it to drive it and wrench on it. I have paid pro's to do alignments, TBelt, WP and starter. But have done brakes, rotors, bearings and various other maintenance and fixes on my own. All I ever need to know I found on MUD.
