Hey all,
ran across a merc diesel and cannot find a lot of info about it. It is a late '70's model OM 314, a beefy 4 cylinder that is mated to an Allison automatic tranny. Came out of a commercial step van. Any thoughts or help on this motor would be appreciated. My swap candidates are my 45 and my 80, and have yet to find the ideal donor engine for either... So I am interested in what this one might have going for it. It has 85 hp and over 250 lb torque, so my first thought is that it is not suited for the 80, but adding a turbo might do the trick.

Cheers,

Joel

I just happened to find a few 3B's and the 2H 6 cyl diesel in canadian 60's.
they seem just to show up.

I would think a yota in yota would be easier ..

I agree with Toyota-Toyota compatibility, but toyo diesel parts in US are harder to find than merc or Mitsubishi... Ideally I want to do a swap like fronage is doing with the Mitsubishi cabover...

Cheers

Well my yota parts for the 3B are from the states.
and like i say , i just found (today 2010/11/03 another 3B and tranny) these are being junked and crushed for scrape ..

I would of though engine and tranys plus tags would be good for the south guys..

I should post this in Clasified before there all gone. There seems to be a huge scrap clean-up thats going around.

I have been asked a few time for any junk !! (it's not junk to me , YET . But !!)

The OM 317 out of 1980 - 1985 vintage 300D's are 5 cylinder turbo and much more common.

The engine model that you should consider is the OM617, 5 cylinder 3L turbo diesel (came in 300d, 300sd, 300sdl, and maybe 300cd). It has great power and has a more use-able rev range (4000 rpm red line i believe).

4x4labs makes an adapter to gm trannies. Or you can wait till they make one for the h55f!!!

Luke at 4x4labs put one of these in an fj40. and i'm putting one in a 1980 toyota pickup

3B parts are easy

Got a 3B with H55 8 hours from you. 3B parts are relatively easy to come by once you know where to look. Bought all mine from CDan.

I am huge fan of the OM617, but it pushes the much lighter and much smaller and more aerodynamic 300D along in an uninspiring manner, even for the standards of the time. (without turbo, that is)

And one with a turbo, will be much improved, as RustyBones says.

But it was never designed for that type of use, 4x4 that is. And there's more to it than just power and torque. That's what I think.

The Toyota Bandeirantes in Brazil came exclusively with the Mercedes diesel until the mid-90's and, then, they were offered side-by-side with the 1HZ as powertrain options.

As far as I know, no B/2B/3B or H/2H/12HT were ever used in the Bandierante - or F/2F for that matter.
