Hi all, my name is Nick Semione and I own What If Survival. We make First Aid Kits ( which you can get here Welcome to what if survival) for all you fine people. On this thread we will start posting occasional first aid training topics and videos from different professionals and W.I.S. to start expanding the community knowledge.

For the first video () I would like to dispel the common rumor that tampons are good for bullet wounds, as you will see this is useless and dangerous. This rumor went as far as US Army Fort Sam Houston Combat Medic School (my brother attended it in 2007) which is just insane. These 2 Flight Medics have an incredible wealth of knowledge and have a well stated argument on why this MYTH is dangerous and completely non factual. One thing to remember, bullet wounds make a wound cavity larger then the small hole you see, so while the tampon would seem to fit in the visible hole well, it wouldn't be stopping bleeding beneath visible hole and simply does not have enough material to adequately compress and absorb bleed site. If you would like basic training in wound packing and tourniquet use please go to https://cms.bleedingcontrol.org/class/search to find a class. Comment and let me know what you think and please let me know what topics you would like covered.

Here is the next training topic, Patient Assessment. This is where you start when you find an injured patient. Never assume that what the patient tells you is the only thing wrong with them. NOLS is a great organization and this video is no exception. Remember other then when they are asking questions to the patient, they're only stating out loud so you know what they're doing . Please let me know what you think, if you have any questions and what other topics you would like to be covered.

This is for educational purposes only.

Next Topic: Hands Only CPR

Hands Only CPR was created because people are not going to do rescue breaths with no face shield device (which we have in our First Aid Response Kits, get one here: Welcome to what if survival ) and because they are have not had the adequate training.
So the steps are pretty simple:
  • If you see someone suddenly collapse, teen or adult, call 9-1-1
  • Begin pushing hard and fast at the center of the chest at a rate of at least 100 to 120 compressions per minute
    • An easy way to remember the correct rate for pushing on the chest is to push to the beat of the disco song “Stayin’ Alive”
  • Do not stop giving compressions unless you see an obvious sign of breathing or a trained responder or EMS personnel arrives to take over
  • If an automated external defibrillator (AED) is available, use as instructed
2 things about performing CPR, expect to break ribs and they will puke so watch out.

My favorite Hands Only CPR video: (If in US call 911)

My favorite Vinnie Jones Video:

Good point Nick, I came across a very similar topic a few weeks ago regarding an unnamed company selling a "Gunshot Trauma Kit" on Amazon that only came with one chest seal. My issue with that is a common person's first aid efforts may be compromised if there is an entry and exit wound present & valuable time could be lost in the confusion. Not everyone reads the fine print so I'm sure you advise all of your clients to completely familiarize yourself with your equipment and it's
capabilities or inadequecies.

I want them to have the training to use them as well. Also, on your patient assessment ALWAYS CHECK FOR EXIT WOUND (and other holes), they can be small and not bleed a lot. By the way, our Premium First Aid Response Kit comes with a Hyfin Chest Seal Twin Pack to solve that very problem. The main reason I made my kits is because I was sick of seeing companies take advantage of their customers who don't know any better. I have seen many kits that use an iv tourniquet to say they have a bleeding control tourniquet... DISGUSTING!!

Thanks for the great comment!!!
