I just picked up my 62 this week. This is my first LC and was wondering on what recomendations you could give on what to watch for as far as mechanical problems that this model trucks have. Mine is a 1990 (built 12/89) with AT and the 3F motor. Also a recomendation on Mod's would be appreciated.

Thanks

I got my cruiser not too long ago either so I've kinda made a list of a few things I felt I needed to do. Here were my top 3 priorities.

1. Check your knuckles for any leaking... if so prepare to do a knuckle job.

2. Brakes, Stock brakes felt scary and they still do. I upgraded to some 9x four runner brakes which helped a liiiitle but I think I need to redo the rears to fully feel the benefit.

3. Transmission. My greatest fear.. Take care of it cause if it breaks.. $$$$$$ Install a tranny cooler and passively flush it with synthetic fluids. Also adjust the Kick down cable.

Thanks for the advice, I looked at the knucles befoe I bought the truck, besides being covered in crap, I could only see fresh grees on the areas that are supposed to have it. Will know more this coming week and I am going to pull the front end apart to replace tie rod ends and check brakes and cables. What all did you need to change the brakes to the fore runner brakes? Where did you find all of the info.

I plan on a tune up this weekend, but had not thought about adjusting the valves. Id that a common need for this motor? I will have my service manual this afternoon. Advance had to order it. so will read that also.

Again thanks for the info and any comments on recommended mods for reliability are welcomed.

Change transmission fluid, check differential fluids. If knuckles aren't leaking excessively, no need to rush into a knuckle job. Jack up the front wheels and wiggle on them in and out. If there's movement then the trunion bearings are bad and you should get on that right away. Tune up is a good idea, although the valve adjustment isn't so critical IMO. Problem areas I've read about here, but haven't experienced, are the Fuel pressure regulator, the vacuum 4WD shifter and the oil hole plug on the head near the #5 sparkplug. This plug can fail, causing a major oil leakdown that has been known to destroy engines if not caught soon enough. I JB welded my plug but the prefered fix is to drill it out and put in a threaded plug, I think.

valve adjust isn't mandatory, but it's likely due for one if your rig suffers from the general lack of upkeep that most of these do when coming from non-cruiser heads.

the valves should sound like a sewing maching, not a jazz band*

*analogy stolen from 3fe list, i think ;)

Mine where a bit load, but changed the oil (needed it badly) with the valvoline high milage oil. That quieted them down nicely. If they start making noise again soon then I will adhust them.

I do have a oil leak on the motor. it looks like it may be that plug by the #5 plug. It is on the back of the motor above the oil pan but below the valve cover. Will know more soon, I presure washed the motor and trans after the oil cange to see what all is leaking.

Find a FSM for a 1990 I think. Find the 1988 new model features manual for some good information too. I don't remember where it is though, sorry.

Congrats on your FJ62 purchase!

Done and Done.

Thanks I am enjoying it. Havent driven either of my other cars since I picked up the LC.
