Hi all,

I’m looking for recommendations on mechanics if anyone has them for the SoCal area (IE/LA/OC). My transfer case is overflowing and I believe the seal between it and the auto trans is shot. I tried YotaMasters but they don’t feel comfortable performing the work.

I was wondering if there’s anyone else within a reasonable drive? They recommended a transmission shop, but I’d prefer someone who already has experience with this type of stuff. Even better if they would be able to do a McNamara gear at the same time.

Thanks

Shocked w/r yotamasters.

What rig are you looking to have worked on?

I was too actually. They had mentioned the concern if there’s issues with the transmission that they might not be equipped to handle them. (Fair, the autos are rare)

It’s an 89’ 62 series with the A440F. Currently runs fine, I only found out because the tcase was leaking and it spilled out once I opened the fill plug. I topped off the transmission with more ATF. Haven’t noticed any issues beyond the leak. I would be more keen on doing it myself if I didn’t have a 4month old at home.

not sure what model/years/auto or manual, but i do recall a plumbing mod that connected the tcase with the tranny to act as a level balacer.

thats not my story & im not sticking to it

I just wanted to update this, I ended up performing the work myself. Cruiser Brothers was able to get me their version of a “McNamara” gear along with a Tcase rebuild kit.

Between having the FSM paper version and YouTube videos, it wasn’t terribly difficult. I didn’t replace the bearings in the gear stack because of the need for a press and they were all in very good shape anyways. Estimated time was about 10 hours.

My recommendations for anyone reading this: watch multiple videos of people doing it, some gloss over stuff that others cover more and vice versa. Reality under the truck is different than a bench rebuild too. Finally, expect delays from seized/rusted hardware, and expect to potentially have to order replacement hardware once your begin.

So far no leaks, but time will tell. The McNamara gear virtually eliminated my clunk going into reverse. It’s now a smooth shift. Definitely worth getting if you plan on taking the case apart.

im not shocked at all w/r to yotamasters declining this job. they really should call themselves as Taco/T4Rmasters because thats all they really know. Unfortunately I know this first hand after relying on them for a number of years and paying them many thousands of dollars.

I'm in search of a LC specialist in the greater Los Angeles area as well. Who do you use/trust now?

Thanks!

Moy at friends & family automotive in Canoga Park knows landcruiser pretty well and is a solid and very trustworthy guy. Andrew at Mayhem Metal Works in Simi valley is also someone I trust and knows landcruisers well.
