Okay, so who is it you're bringing it to (which shop)?

Also, why not just first replace the pads (super easy for any shop or you) and see how she does? Even some pulsating brakes can be cured by new pads. I also never have a rotor turned unless absolutely necessary. I have come to believe that every shop in the nation seems to want to turn them or replace them no matter what their age or wear, so that's just a given.

Now that my brakes are going to be sorted out, I'm not in as much of a rush as I was.

I think I'm going to try and do some of the easier stuff myself (replace wire set, distro, rotor, oil pressure switch, fuel filter, etc). I should be placing my cdan order today or tomorrow.

And then have Toyowest do some of the other stuff (engine decarb, tune up, blah blah) just because they are close, and have all the gear, and a shop. I think as long as I keep a tight reign on them, they'll be alright. Plus they are willing to use cdan parts.

Also, Toyomotors kinda put my off with all that stuff about needing to replace both rotors and the rad. I mean, they are probably OK too. But if I'm going to have to babysit a shop, it may as well be closer to home.

And finally, I felt like I was taken a little more seriously at TW. The guy at TM was kinda condescending. TOTALLY subjective on my part, but that's just how it felt to me.

Car is real sick!!

Well I'm screwed!!! I've got water in my oil.
I'm rolling the dice with Vern at Toyota Specialists, so I'll let you all know how that goes.
I'll find out if the head is warped, cracked, or if it's just a head gasket.
What a frick'in drag!!

Cruiser is fixed

Went to Vern at Toy Specialist in Mesa and he did a fine job.
Pulled the head, resurfaced it, new gaskets, valve guides, water pump, themostat, heater hose.
Running great!!!

Looks like I'll have to get the trunion seals repaired next. Besides that everything is good.

Verns was a good guy, and he knows cruisers.

Thank you everyone for the feedback on finding a mechanic!!! I hope to meet some of you all at a CSC function.

Good to hear, Bill!

I dropped my rig off at Thiele's on Thursday. He didn't really get a chance to look at it til today -- he's understaffed at the moment. He gave me a summary of what looks like the more important issues, and the less important issues, and recommends working on certain ones at the same time, and he didn't talk down to me. His rough estimate wasn't too bad either. So far, I like him.

Well, Bill, I'm now in the same boat. Head gasket failed yesterday.

What did he charge you and how long was the turn around time? You can PM me the financials if that would be more appropriate.

Thanks,

Ed

I think mine is getting ready to go.
I've been using about 18 ounces of water per 500 miles and can't find any leaks in the cooling system.
It's not smoking but I'm not sure if that's enough agua to get it noticably smoking.
Just got of the phone with Vern's shop and they seem really good.
Now I just have to decide if I'm going to have it done as PM or wait for the impending.....

Epic Ed did your's give you any clues that it was going to go?
How many miles are on it?
Thanks!

Well, I've been having radiator issues with it since I bought it with 202,000 miles last August. My engine temp was fine around town -- even in stop & go, or parking lot conditions on the highway. The temp gauge would start to climb, however, if I did any major hill climbing (like trips up to Flagstaff). Kevin helped me check the fan clutch and that was pulling fine so we eliminated air flow as an issue and figured it was a partially block radiator. I haven't ever had the temp gauge climb high than 3/4, but I guess having even that happen a couple of times weakened the head gasket slowly. I didn't really have any symptoms of failure until Tuesday when I noticed that the engine was idling rough. Having just changed out the EGR stuff last weekend I figured a hose had come loose or some other simple explanation. Yesterday while in highway traffic I noticed the A/C had cut off and immediately looked at the temp gauge -- it was very slightly higher than normal, which we know for 80s could mean 15-30 degrees too hot.

I've been down this road too many times with my 4Runner and right away guessed it was likely the head gasket. I pulled off the highway quickly and checked for leaks -- no coolant leak anywhere, but the radiator was boiling so I knew it had lost coolant somewhere -- and if there aren't any visible leaks, well...bad news.

I hadn't observed any white smoke at this point and I decided to nurse it home. After letting it cool down at home I popped the radiator cap and added distilled water and it sucked down nearly a gallon. More tell tale was the fumes from the radiator smelled like exhaust. I started it up this morning expecting the worst and, sure enough, I had white smoke that smelled like coolant billowing from the exhuast pipe in about 20 seconds.

No need to test any further. I get it. It's hosed.

So -- my only "heads up" was the rough idle, which I incorrectly attributed to something else. Doesn't mater because at that point it was failing anyways. I don't think I have made matters much worse by driving it until yesterday because at least the oil is still clean and not a foamy chocolate milk type of goop. Needless to say, I've shut her down until I get it fixed. I called Vern this afternoon and got an estimate.

Ed

PS -- oh, and it has just under 215,000 miles on the OD, but I have no idea about previous maintenance before I bought it at 202,000.

Ed,

Well the whole thing with fluids, water pump, themastat, belts, heater hose, head resurfaced, valve guides, gaskets, etc. came to about $1,900.00. The turn around time was one week. He did a great job, and I'd go back to him again.
My car is running great now and has power, and no longer idles erratic.

First thing Vern looked for when I took my car there was the top of the oil cap, and notice it had a white milky sustance which was water in my oil. So it reconfimed my suspicions that my head gasket was probably gone. It was # 6 Cylinder. Vern said #1 and # 6 Cylinders are notorious for blowing.

Hope this was helpful.

Has anyone dealt with Larry Miller Toyota's service dept? I got a quote from them that was on par with other quotes I've received today. The main advantage for me would be that they're close to my house and offer a nice discount for a rental car.

Your thoughts?

Ed

Hey, Vern ain't an alkie! Just likes his Coors Light is all!! :) (after hours, of course)
