Join PMC and TLCA on the McGrew Trail September 27th thru 29th as we host the final McGrew Trail Ride in honor of Jeff Bomke who passed away in November of 2023.

Itinerary calls for running the historic McGrew Trail on Friday, camping at Sourdough along the Smith River on Saturday and exiting Sunday. There is also a forest service access option for stock trucks and non Toyota vehicles. Yes, you can probably get in via your full size truck.

Saturday night we will continue our long tradition of Pot Luck dinner followed by Tony's two ticket raffle. That is correct, you can only purchase 2 tickets.

I will post more information as the week progresses so check back in. If you are sure you can attend, post up.

As you recall, we were set run the trail in July of 2023 but Jeff's condition had deteriorated so rapidly we were forced to postpone the event. Here is the info Jeff posted:
*****
There will be several options for participants during this year's July 21 - 23 ride. These will be either for those that want to drive the historic wagon trail to the intersection for camp on Friday the 21st only and those that want to drive the alternative USFS gravel route to camp on their own on Friday or Saturday at any time of their choosing (https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/sourdough-camp).

We have a single day USFS Permit to traverse the historic, traditional wagon trail on July 21 only (HIGHLY RESTRICTED ACCESS due to sensitive habitat). The trail itself is mostly just rough and rocky and requires not too much more than a stock Toyota 4x4. A completely stock rig can do this route with some degree of patience, careful picking of lines, paying close attention to the path at all times, and not being too proud to ask for a spotter in some spots.

All participants for the wagon route must be ready to meet on " New Date " , behind the O’Brien Country Store, located adjacent to US HWY 199, in O’Brien, Oregon (US HWY 199 travels between I-5, in Grants Pass, OR and US HWY 101, in Crescent City, CA. the tiny town of O’Brien is roughly the mid point and distinguished by a single yellow flashing light).

All vehicles must be thoroughly washed, especially the undercarriage, to prevent the spread of Port Orford Cedar Root Disease and Sudden Oak Death (the USFS is very serious about this, even as far as inspecting the inner fender lips)

The trailhead is at a locked yellow gate 4 miles west up Lone Mountain Road from the store. We'll be at the gate until 9:30 for any stragglers. After that, the gate will be locked and you'll have to drive USFS roads to camp.

We traverse the trail all the way to the last intersection to Sourdough (USFS Campground on North Fork Smith River) and should arrive in camp late afternoon..

Sourdough Campground (primitive):
Basically, the idea is for all participants to get to this primitive campground on the North Fork of the Wild and Scenic Smith River some time before dinner, Saturday, the 22nd. Plan on a potluck dinner sometime around 6pm so bring whatever suits you to share. With this year's normal rainfall in this area so far, the swimming holes will be deep and beautiful, we may be allowed campfires, and the mosquitos will be friendly!

If you participated in one of our many McGrew Trails Rides, please join us to say thanks to Jeff Bomke.

I have secured a permit to run the trail. I am about to finalize the shirt design. Uncle Bud and I are prerunning the route this weekend to ensure I understand where the bridge is that is out due to fire damage.

I have a lot of interest about this run and believe we should have a small but solid turn out.

If you are attending, remember to thoroughly clean the undercarriage of your truck or vehicle due to Port Orford Cedar Root disease. This is a forest service requirement and part of our permit requirements.

There are no restroom facilities at Sourdough Campground (the unit there is in fail mode) and each person will need to come prepared such as wag bag or other means.

More to come as we draw closer...

I was able to prerun the route from O'Brien, OR via forest service road and road 4402 to the bridge in the Diamond Creek drainage.

While it appears the bridge has been used since the fire, our permit specifically notes not using this bridge and thus our O'Brien route utilizing the McGrew Trail to access Sourdough campground will consist of exiting via Roudy creek (High Divide) and back to Hwy 197 and Hyouchi.

There will two groups entering Friday, Sept 27th...

A: O'Brien, OR and run the McGrew Trail (very rough and rocky, do not suggest stock vehicles) to 4402 (in the saddle) and then 5 miles down to Sourdough Campground. Exit Sunday with entire group or alone back to saddle on 4402 and out Forest Service road via Roudy Creek (AKA High divide and low divide). Propose meeting time at O'Brien store is 9 AM to allow all day to navigate this historic route.

B: Hyouchi, CA and take the forest service road in via Roudy creek (AKA High divide and low divide) to the saddle and then 5 miles down to Sourdough campground. Exit Sunday with entire group or alone back to saddle on 4402 and out Forest Service road via Roudy Creek (AKA High divide and low divide).
Propose meeting time at Hyouchi gas station is 10 AM as this is a shorter and quicker route. Recommend all stock type vehicles take this easier route.

It should be noted that PMC had a member who took his wife on the McGrew Trail... she never went with him again. This is a very rocky and rough and bouncy trail.

The restroom ... unit for lack of a better word, is incapacitated according the Forest Service and other means should be provided. Please come prepared to manage all your own garbage and waste. Suggest WAG bags or other similar means. Also, there is ample forest a short walk away.

No formal registration but if you are reading this thread and plan on attending, please post up including shirt size if you want a shirt. Very limited quantities will be made available. Saturday is pot luck dinner, please bring some thing to share, ideally a hot dish as these are often limited. This has worked well in the past and always a bunch of food. You are responsible for all other meals and food, etc.

That evening will have my Two Ticket raffle... that is correct, you can only purchase two tickets, all proceeds to go to Jeff's wife and family. Donations above the ticket price are encouraged. Yes, this is rather fun as I raffle off all the worthless stuff in an effort to knock folks out of the raffle before I get to the good stuff with the remaining ticket holders. Oh, raffle donations are also encouraged and welcomed immensely. Bring something nice and I'll toss you a PMC swap meet shirt.

I leave for another week in Rubicon Springs and will post up again around Sept 9th as we turn our full attention to this Trail Ride. I am looking for to seeing everyone there... old friends and new faces! I am hoping for a good turnout and I hope not to tear up too much saying goodbye to my friend.

Just over a week away.

We have our permit, gate code 2424. We have shirts in hand, only XL left if interested.
We have two groups going in: McGrew trail 9 AM Friday, meet at O'Brien store. Hiouchi 10 AM Friday, FS road, meet at gas station.
We have two trail leaders: Connor will lead the trail ride, Tony will lead the FS road.
We have a destination: Sourdough campground by Friday evening. Camp thru Sunday morning.
We have activities: wheeling, exploring, fishing, swimming, horseshoes, Left Right Center Friday night, Pot Luck and raffle Saturday night.
We have an exit plan: everyone leaves Sunday morning between 9 and 10, FS road back out to Hiouchi.

We DON'T have a clean access route back to O'Brien for those parking trailers. If you rig is streetable, you can drive around from Hiouchi back to O'brien... not ideal but not the end of the world. Please plan accordingly. The Diamond creek bridge is unavailable per out permit.

You should bring:

Your camp gear expecting damp nights (dew) possibly.
A vehicle that has been thoroughly cleaned beneath... that is, the undercarriage needs clean (port orford cedar root disease)
A suitable means for a restroom as their are no facilities functioning. (wag bag, etc... have a plan)
Your swim suite and floaty in case the weather is warm.
Your food for the weekend and favorite beverage(s).
A warm jacket in case the weather is cool.
An item to share at the Pot Luck (expect between 15 to 24 folks).
Your utensils and a plate for the pot luck.
A raffle prize to donate to the Two Ticket Raffle.
Your wallet with some cash in it. All proceeds from shirt sales and ticket sales will be given to Jeff's family. As this is Jeff's memorial run, there is no set price for shirts and no set price for two raffle tickets. Please give what you can afford. also, you need some $1 dollar bills for Friday.
Your jovial wit and your positive attitude.

I am bringing an outdoor fire pit. If anyone can bring an extra Rhino can of fuel, that would be great as these things do eat propane.
If you can bring an extra table or volunteer yours for the pot luck, that would help immensely.

Feel free to ask questions. Feel free to bring other stuff you feel would add to the experience.

I do not know specifically who is coming nor an actual headcount but I believe:

Tony and Cindy, Uncle Bud, Ross and Tina, Dion and Andy, Don G, Dave T, Chris L, Jeff G, Lori and Shelby, Conner and Sean, couple more of Lori's friends, .... from Mud, I see Pistolrvr, minitruck91, AgentOrange. Sorry, don't know who that is based upon Mud handles.

Only shirts not spoken for are XL.

There were a couple of Jeep owners who contacted me about tagging along on our permit, behind our group. You bet.

That is all for now... believe we are good to go.

Thanks Patrick... Thanks Don G. for bringing extra propane.

Folks, Tony,

My apologies - I need to bail on this weekend. I have a minor family emergency that I have to attend to. Nothing major, but I need to stick in the Bay Area. Sorry for the last minute notice.

For those of you on the trip. Keep an eye out on the east side of Low divide road (305) between Rockland/Major Moore's and Alta (17N49 jct) for some old circular stone corrals that are still (kind of) standing. They were there when my great grandmother drove her wagon (and 4 kids) past there on her way from Colorado to the Oregon coast, where my family is from.

T, if you have an XL left I'll take it, how much $ and where to send ? I will be in TN for Oct meeting.

I want to thank everyone who made the journey to attend Jeff's final McGrew Trail Ride. and specifically PMC Members Don Gatton, Dion Mattei, Chris Larson and Ross & Tina Woody. Coupled with Jeff and Lori's friends and a few others such as Russ and Patrick & Jasmine with their kids, we had a good turnout and a very successful weekend. A small group ran the trail including Lori driving Jeff's Land Cruiser (thanks Conner for taking the Lead) and a few of us bombed in on the FS road.

I also understand there was a small group coming in that lost a truck down a hillside and had to bail, returning on Sunday to extract. Hope everyone was OK, believe the name was Paul?

The weather was perfect, we had the campground to ourselves and yes, we all swam. Played horseshoes; Left Right Center, and had a nice fire ring for evening ombiance. The Pot Luck was awesome and the two ticket raffle saw both winners and losers. All the funds taken in for tickets and shirts were donated to Jeff's family. Everyone who won L R C later donated all their winnings too. What a great group.

It was great to see Russ Faulkner there, long time McGrew Trail Ride participant; and meet new folks such as Patrick and Jasmine along with their two boys and dog in their 80 series... the boys were great and really cracked me up. At the start of the raffle, I offered to trade them some Matchbox truck sets for their tickets, to which the younger replied 'I'll take my chances'.

It would gave been great to see a few JSC members such as Garett and Arik and Kief to name a few but I certainly understand and we missed (talked) about you.

Ross ran out of gas driving home but come to find out, it's part of his routine... I ran of gas driving Lori's 40 home on 199... fortunately Chris and Uncle Bud were behind me along with Don to retrieve gas. All part of the adventure!

Dave T, John, Doug... yes, have XL shirts for you but beyond that, all gone.

Again, thank you all. It meant to the world to Lori and she is very appreciative.
