Location
land of enchantment, at least for now
I've talked to Mark by email several times, but never met him. He sent me this last week. If you aren't going to Moab, could be a good time.

Mark your calendars.

Saturday May 5th. Meeting time to be announced later.

Michelle has organized a cleanup of the Web trail and the 155 Area up in the
Carson National Forest around Abiquiu. The El Rito District is going to
have a dumpster up there for the non-hazardous trash, and the L.E.O. for the
Carson National Forest is clearing the paperwork so we can get the abandon
vehicles out.

I know that Michelle and some of the people from Albuquerque are going to
camp out Saturday night and leave on Sunday.

I think I have more info, I'll look tonight. And I'll see what contact info he is okay with here.

I was up there a few weeks ago. It would be a real shame to lose this area, it is truly a jewel and it is only two hours from Albuquerque.

Can someone post directions to this trail?

I don't exactly know what points of reference to use, I have only been there once and I was invited by locals. The trails are right off the right (east) side of 84, one of them (Area 155) is behind the elementary school and the other one (The Webb) is a little further north before you get to the reservoir. It runs through an arroyo from the highway up to a power line road.

Are you going to the cleanup?

The first is behind the Abiquiu Elementary School, and the second is to the north a few miles - take off at the top of the hill at the rest stop. They have apparently worked on the arroyo trail some as those vehicles look pretty tame compared to the way the trail used to look - although there were only a couple of sets of tracks where the third pic was taken when we went there last year - we took another route to the power line. Vince led that trip.

I would not call it tame. There were only five vehicles in the group (all locked front and rear) and it took most of the day to go a short distance. Only the Jeep on 42s did not have to winch. Definitely still a challenge. More people must have been through the trail by now though because the exit road cut to the power line road is pretty well established now.

Is this trail numbered? I need to do some work right in that area some time in that area and wouldn't mind seeing it in person.

It's not numbered, it's user-created. But it's easy to find. As soon as you come up the hill towards the reservoir there is a pull-off to your right, it has a picnic table or dumpster or something, IIRC. (It is past the 23 road turnoff). There is a road thru the fence at the back of the pull off and almost immediately after passing the fence, the trail starts up the arroyo, left of the road.

I think it's great the Ranger is interested in working with the wheeling community to clean up this area. I hope that's a positive sign towards cooperation to retain these routes and areas through the travel management process.

Here is a little more from Mark:
Saturday
is supposedly cleanup with wheeling on Sunday. We will have several groups
showing up from Santa Fe, Albuquerque, and maybe from Pagosa Springs if it
isn't to short of notice for those guys.
His email is: m_h_anderson@netzero.com
