Hello everyone, we have a overlanding 3 Day 2 night run coming up. Dates are may 17-19 , the meeting location (see link) on the 17th @9:30 a.m. leave to the trail @10:00 a.m. Friends of Jawbone · Mojave, California - https://maps.app.goo.gl/6Dd5QaXHnVn18tVw5.

A link to the downloaded (edited) trail map will be available from Evan, within 24 hours please monitor this thread for further details . We will need someone Friday to assist with their electronic Trail guidance device . Evan will meet up with us Friday late afternoon , at the first camp site.

Our tennative plan is to Camp the first night somewhere in the vicinity of Red Rock Canyon State Park, or near by , and the second night at Trona Pinnacles area. Return home Sunday the 19th .
As always trips are subject to change .
The only real issue that could change this event would be high winds forecast on that weekend.

If interested in this trip please reply to this thread, you can also call me directly.

I'm interested, schedule permitting. Any chance for a rendezvous location on Saturday?

This is the route we will be taking for this overland trip: Trona Desert Trail (Red Rock Bypass) - Google My Maps - https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1urOD8d0j0Ym2Xrj2bQ1EK0G0DlbPk4o&usp=sharing

Friday: Jawbone Loop (entering at Friends of Jawbone, exiting Dove Spring Entrance) -> First Campsite at or around 35.42732, -117.87851 (bypassing more of the technical Red Rock Canyon Section via Hwy 14 - Redrock Canyon Rd/Red Rock Inyokern Rd - Unnamed Rd - Last Chance Canyon Rd - FS-EP15). If time permits: Points of interests on the way to camp include Holly Ash Mine and Bickel Camp ()

Saturday: Camp -> Burro Schmidt Cabin/Tunnel (> Trona Pinnacles (via EP15 - Mesquite Canyon Rd. - Unnamed Rd - Crossing 395 to The Football Field OHV - Unnamed Rd - Pinnacle Rd/Teagle Wash Rd - Campsite at Trona Pinnacle). Campsite at Trona Pinnacles will be at or around 35.61638, -117.35931.

Sunday: Trona Pinnacles -> Home

See screen shots of the map for the Friday and Saturday's route (highlighted). I would also highly recommend downloading the trail map from the link above (KML/KMZ) and importing it into Gaia or OnX Maps.

Approximate distance will be 150 miles. I suggest topping off at Jawbone Gas Station before and Ridgecrest after.
Average Technical Rating: 3 with Peak Technical Rating 5. Recommended Vehicle High Clearance 4x4

For additional information, feel free to take a look at: Trona Desert Trail - https://www.overlandtrailguides.com/post/trona-desert-trail (we will only be doing the first half of this trail from Jawbone to Trona Pinnacles)

Unfortunately, I will not be able to meet up with everyone until evening, but any questions feel free to contact me directly at 626.348.1273.

Google Maps shows that from Friends of Jawbone to our anticipated first night camp coordinates is about 40 minutes by the most direct route. I don’t know if I will have cell service there, but should have service near Hwy 14. I can post an update here Friday afternoon, and I can be sure to monitor 146.535 on Saturday morning.

Evan - How likely do you think it is that we’ll make the anticipated camp, and that it’ll be available for Friday night? Do you think Dat will have a good chance of linking up with us on Saturday morning?

I have never personally run this trail before, but I would say it is very likely that you guys should be able to make the anticipated campsite Friday night. We plan to bypass most of the Red Rock section to avoid any potential technical areas and believe it is just dirt road a majority of the way east of Hwy +14 to camp.

I believe camping should be plentiful as it is just open BLM desert and can be able to post up anywhere at or near 35.42732, -117.87851. Based on google maps, there are several open areas along FS-EP15 within a mile or so of 35.42732, -117.87851. (Back up campsites include 35.430695, -117.884313 and 35.421651, -117.872983). I do not think Dat will have any problems linking up with us either at camp or at our first point of interest Saturday morning (Burro Schmidt Cabin/Tunnel) close by to our first night's campsite.

Attached is the screen grab of the potential campsites. (the desired campsite is pinned, while the backup sites are highlighted)

My truck will be sold and gone next week if all goes as planned with buyer. I don't think an 11 year old Prius is up to this route!! Bye bye until I get my Tacoma.

Congrats on the sale. I'm sorry I miss out due to poor timing but such is life. I hope the sale includes a one-year membership to SoCal TLCA.

Do Not Underestimate the power that is Prius!!!

Landcruiser 80 to Tacoma, hmm....
There must already be a thread on this swap ;)

Well, my membership is paid up for this year. I'll keep my TLCA membership.

What power? Perhaps a lift is in order for awhile!!

Brent,
Make sure you go over with the buyer the proper sequence of Park before Start (from the pimos chronicles)
I, rightfully so, am never going to live that one down, am I?🤣

the description indicates a peak technical rating of 5. a stock LX 470 with 33" tires and sliders + beginner/intermediate driver is suitable for this trip?

I have never done this run before, but I believe it will be suitable for stock high clearance 4x4s. I believe the more technical parts are through Red Rock (which we will be bypassing to save time) and into Death Valley (east of Trona which we will not be going through this time).

hi evan,

question w/r to the mapping in general: looks like you imported "canned" map from ? (gaia?) into my maps with way points. can you enlighten me on how that was done?

also, can you use my maps as a realtime navigation map offline a-la gaia

reason: my maps seems to be cleaner w/o gaia noise. If all yes, I would run both due to occasional need for gaia layers.

It looks like I will make this run on Saturday and possibly Friday but unlikely will be able to leave with everyone in the morning. In case anyone else is planning similarly, I've linked my tentative route by Gaia GPS to meet up with everyone on Saturday morning. Topo Maps, Trail Maps, and Satellite Imagery - https://www.gaiagps.com/map/?loc=11.4/-117.9666/35.3655&pubLink=hjeTdtuCwBV1lsoYQzpOOYc0&trackId=ea1c29ff-66b4-49ee-853e-4a7d6525a7f7. The route branches off Hwy 14 at Redrock Randsburg Road and heads north at a dirt road toward Last Chance Canyon. The entire trek is about 6.4 miles up hill gaining about 2600 ft over 4.5 miles then shedding roughly 1000 ft over 2 miles into camp.

The more highway alternative route is to continue on Hwy 14 further north then follow google map to camp.

Let me know if you see any flaws or concerns!

Dat

Hey!

I have subscription to Overland Trail Guides (OTG) which allows me to access tons pre-routed offroad/overland trails all over North America. With that access, I have the ability to download the digital mapping file of all the trails I'm doing. When downloading, they give you the option to download it as a GPX or KMZ file. (KMZ Files can be uploaded to google maps or google earth, the benefit of uploading the file to google maps is that the waypoints and points of interest will retain their original setting.)

I download the KMZ ( from OTG) file then created a My Maps library containing all the trails that look interesting and wish to run in the future. Within My Maps, you are then able to use the "Draw A Line Feature" then "add driving route" to edit, or add to an existing map. You can also simply start from a completely blank map to create your own trail with My Maps using the Draw A Line Feature. (I have created my own off-road trails using My Maps then exported to Gaia to follow)

However, when I actually hit the road, I export the map from My Maps and import it to Gaia. I personally like Gaia since it provides a lot more driving and terrain information compared to My Maps, but like you said My Maps is cleaner without the noise. I personally have never tried using My Maps as an off-line trail map, so I am not exactly sure how well it would work. When I clicked on the link above for this month's trail run with my phone it defaulted to open with Google Maps App and it showed the whole trail. Theoretically, it might work if you download the offline map of that area, open the My Maps link on your mobile device, then select the Points of Interests you are trying to drive to, and it should give you the Google Maps driving instructions even offline since you downloaded the offline map of that area.

Hopefully that answers your question! Let me know if you have any other questions, and I would be glad to show you how I do it in person if you're interested.

These are just some of the maps i have downloaded/created that's in My Maps Library and if anyone is interested in doing any run in particular, I'd be glad to share some of these trails.

Hi evan and thanks for the explaination.

I'm still not getting the advantage of my maps in the train of mapping (otg (i have that subscription as well)....my maps...gaia). I've done some my map work (manly long traditional vacation traveling), but never regularly enough to see benifits.

I would very much appreciate your kind in-person offer to do a quick (if possible) tutorial.

I won't be on this upcoming run due to ana's lofty trans-catalina thru hike. Also, i note that the club monthly's dont work for you because of distance.

Let's keep in touch w/r to possible chances to run into each other (ah.....no pun intended....doh) on future club events (or non-sanctioned runs). Or a zoom session......

You do good work, sir!

No worries! Would gladly give you a quick run down the next time we meet in person or over zoom! Meetings are a bit difficult for me to make due to my distance, but I do plan on making it to at least a few meetings (I'll post on mud for the meetings I plan on attending, but it probably won't be until after July.

I think the main advantage of My Maps over Gaia or OnX Maps is its simplicity, though it does not give you as much data compared to Gaia or OnX. It is easier for people without Gaia (or a designated app for maps) to access, read, and visualize. When I do trips with other groups of friends, I am usually the only one with Gaia, so providing my friends with a My Maps link with the planned out trail gives them the heads up/general knowledge of what trail(s) we will be taking.
