Run anywhere you choose. It would be fun to get in a snow run before it's all gone. I'll probably have to sit it out or ride with someone as I'm getting the rear diff rebuilt again (4th time).

Is it because you tow your trailer so much? That seems excessive even considering the off road usage. Good to see Jim back on the forums. Hope we get to see you on the trails again soon.

It is excessive and I'm getting darn weary of it. Don't think my 1200# trailer has anything to do with it. Even my 3300# trailer was way below the tow rating of 5000#. Each time it's been torn down the mechanic blames the previous builder for not setting something up right. They can't all be wrong. Last rebuilding I was extremely careful with break-in cause I did not want to go thru this again. Yet here we are.

How many miles are you getting per gear set? I have a hard time seeing the install good wrong so many times.

Are you running an oem stock geared 3rd? Maybe upgrade to a Yukon or Nitro set? I could see a single rebuild happening but not what you're experiencing.

The OEM gears were replaced with Nitro 4.88s four years ago. They lasted about 6 months. Replaced with complete 3rd member from East Coast Gear. That lasted until March 2013. Broken ring gear and same thing happened in 2010. This time rear diff is getting very noisy, probably bearings going bad. I don't drive my truck hard and service is always on time. Use nothing but synthetic lube. Bottom line is this tiny 8" ring gear is too small. This is the same rear axle that is under Garret's mini-truck. Toyota should be ashamed! I am very sick of the expense and down time!!!

That's too bad, I'd still expect a longer life out of that set up. Looks like you need a diamond housing with a cruiser 9.5". It's only money right??

Looked at getting a Currie last time but back ordered several months. It is strange that Moab 4x4, who did the original gear swap, had trouble getting the front diff set up right, but not the back. Yet the front diff has never given me trouble.

It is a little ridiculous they are still using that axle. It works fine on my truck but its a feather weight compared to modern vehicles.
