Make your own McNamara?

Is this a good idea? Is there a quality writeup someplace? If this is not a good idea, where do I call for a new gear? Mine isn't broken yet, but I don't really trust it very far.

You can weld the input gear to the spacer to the PTO gear and let it share the load. I tried cutting the splined section off a diff companion flange the other day to see if I could use it for the spacer but it seems too tight. If you could get a piece of spined tube like that and weld it to the gear, that woulnd be the hot ticket, I figure. What's the spline count of a d shaft slip joint?

I've seen this somewhere-you weld the input gear, the spacer and PTO gear together and make a poor man's McNamara. I have no idea if it actually works.
