Hi Guys,

Any clues on 79 series fuel gauges ?

My main gauge ( not sub ) displays eratic levels after fuel gets down to 3/4 full.
The gauge appears miss 1/4 tank of fuel. It happens at various times and is not consistant.

Would it be the sender or float ?

Not sure how this works.....Thanks in advance.

NT

The manual says to measure the resistance at full, half, empty. You have to measure the position of the float......
Its on page BE34 o the Body and Chassis manual

I would check the wiring at the tank. Because its intermittant ,its probably a loose wire

Thank you squire ! :D

I will post up a thread when I get around to checking it.

 NT

BTW mate do you have any pics of your fj45 ,hardly see any on the roads anymore they are one of my fav and toughest looking cruisers i rekon

Like a Genie, your request is my command, you do realise this will bring me to sobs of uncontrollable crying:crybaby:

At least till I sit in my 79, it is the only therapy that works at the moment. Apart from this site;)

Mate that rig looks tough as,My old man had a few 45's that colour back in the day, would love to have had one of them handed down.
sounds like you had it for a while ay

Well I got fed up with my dodgy main tank gauge, I was crawling around underneath and I could not get to the wires as they are on top of the tank. Not alot of room up there even to squeeze a arm in:frown:

So alas I booked it in to the dealer for a repair, thats when I found out the PO had an extended warranty that transferred over to me......got two years to go.....heheheheh

So they ended up pulling the whole tank out and it was the sender. A hint at this may be now the empty light comes on, I never even knew there was one !

I also found out it has a new gearbox, apparently the old one got stuck in 5th towing and the PO demanded a new one, its only got 20 though on it, for a 130,000 K vehicle that made me very happy :D
Any how all good now....and didnt cost me a cent:D

Wow ,its not often you get good news at the dealer;)
I had a HJ61 once and the records showed it had a new box under warranty after 5th died.
It was also used for towing:rolleyes:

Thats good news mate but if you have to get to it some time yourself take the driver seat out 4 x 14 mm bolts pull the vinal/carpet up and there is a little circle/lid thing there with a few screws holding it in
