Made the plunge and bought a 2004 Sequoia 4WD with 132,500 miles. Heavy on the mileage, timing belt replaced at 120K, maintenance records, spotless. $12K. White. Downside, only 1 key/remote. Ok, that's solveable. First brief trip on the highway... avg mileage trip indicated was 21.6mpg. Can't complain about that. Kind of surprised.

I was surprised, actually, very surprised. I have a friend who makes semi-frequent trips on the interstate, 75MPH on cruise control and gets 23.

For such a b-i-g vehicle I am amazed. My old 4Runner, now my daughters, barely gets that. And, the ride on the Sequoia... very nice. It has 17" rims, something I didn't realize before I bought it. Ok for now but will grimace in 25K when I need new tires. This is a replacement for my FJ60, now sold to my brother-in-law. A big change...

I am now working on removing the 3rd row seats and have found an apparent issue that is very, very common; seats won't come out. Well... one seat comes out, one doesn't. So, tonight is an adventure in "3rd Row 101".

Location; OBD-II on an "04 Sequoia

Apologies.... should be '04, not 99. Couldn't find a quick way to edit the previous message title.

Thanks !

I gotta call BS on that mileage. I have an 06 and the best I've ever seen out of a tank is 14 - mixed city/hwy.

Glad you like it, though!

I got 19.8 with mine, but I was coming up the columbia river gorge with an empty rig and one heck of a tailwind. I usually get about 17 on long freeway runs.

If you have the black key, you can order another key on ebay for about 14 bucks and program it yourself. If you don't have the black key, the dealer will have to do it and it will hurt.

I believe you can easily fit 16" rims on there. You can look at any of the 6-lug Toyota offerings from 4Runners, Tacoma's, Tundra's, etc. Definitely the 265/75/16's or 265/70/16's will be cheaper than the 17" versions.

That mileage does seem off to me, too. The best my Tacoma got was 22MPG. Did you verify this with the old fill up, divide # gallons by miles traveled method?

I just got a Sequoia passed down from my father in law (thanks Dad! ;) ) We needed a family car and he was going to trade his in. Honestly, I LOVE this rig, it is a little nicer ride than the 40 with 35's ;)

As for mpg, he said it got an honest 20-23 mpg. We got almost 16mpg, fully laden coming up to Colorado's high country and crossing two passes... I'd say that those numbers are reasonable. The computer display might be generous, but the pump doesn't lie.

I will post up when we get a few more tanks under our belt.

I feel like a King when I drive that thing! :D

anybody towing a trailer with their sequoia? thinking about getting one but I need to be able to pull a 40 with it :)

It should pull a 40 with no problem. My wife pulled a packed 12ft uhaul trailer from ID to VA with no issues.

After about 1200 miles it's averaging 18.4. That includes a mix of 40% highway and 60% local trips. The break point for highway MPG appears to be about 70 MPH. Above that the mileage drops off quickly. Below that, the opposite. Nothing unexpected, not spectactular but I am happy with it. $12K for a used Sequoia at 18.4 or $35K for a new Highlander at 21... no regrets and avoided a lot of depreciation. I now put the cruise on 68 on the freeway, move to the slow lane and enjoy the ride.

Programming a key... tried the ebay route and could never find a in-car programming sequence that worked. And I tried a LOT of them. Called the dealers: $150-280 per key. Called locksmiths and initially got some quotes that were a bit less but nothing dramatic. Finally found a local mobile guy who cut/programmed/tested two (2) keys for $130. I am sure that some have had success with the ebay route, particularly with 2001-2002 Sequoias, but my experience with a 2004 was a pain in the posterior. The neighbors were wondering why I was turning the key 5 times, opening the door 6 times, changing keys... oh well, provided them cheap entertainment. Regardless, the dealer pricing was truely a rip off. The keyless remote entry that I bought on ebay to match with the key programmed in the vehicle just fine. Just not the key. So I am set unless I lose a LOT of keys...
