Took my 81 FJ60 into my machanic...he diognosed bad rign & pinion and all seals..also U-Joints front and rear.....

Had all that work done...awesome.....NOT !!

Went to pick it up today...makes the same noise....gravely when you step on the gas.....

WTF.....

Went back in with a great attitude and explained the same noise, sure they were aware of it.....Prolly just wanted to see what I would say...

These guy's rule....family and church friends...and very honest machanics...

So, they are complely overhauling my DIFF. at no charge.....

By the time this is all said and done, my 81 FJ60 will be brand new from the motor to the ass end.

There is hope for auto garages after all...!!!

So what did they do when they changed the R&P? I realize they're making it right, but why did they do half a job in the 1st place then try to pass it off?

Bet you end up paying for any additional parts (bearings, seals, crush sleeve).

They already replaced the ring and pinion and it still made the noise? I doubt another "overhaul" will find anything that wasn't obvious the first time around. Are you sure the noise is coming from the diff?

ring pinion, all seals/bearings in and outer...U-joints etc...

He did mention in the beggining that the transfer would need an overhaul, but thought the diff. work would clear up the noise.

Onto the transfer...I will keep you posted.

I would not argue paying for parts if all is good..........

Get under it and start shaking things..

Cruiser do not make noises unless something is loose. And it is apparent when something is...

generally speaking, "gravelly noise" = bad bearing(s)....

if your mechanic has already identified the t-case as needing attention, then you might check the bearing on the output shaft of the t-case since they've already replaced the pinion bearing in the diff in addition to new u-joints. there is one for the front output shaft on the t-case as well and if they are going to rebuild the case, these along with new seals, should be replaced.

follow Mace's suggestion: crawl under your rig and grab the rear driveshaft where it leaves the t-case and give it a good push/pull a few times. if the bearing is worn or loose, you will feel play at the output flange.

My 60 is a 1984, production date Nov. 1983. When we bought it, the tranny made a noise that sounds exactly what you are describing. Kind of like gravel rolling around in something. I took it to a respected transmission shop here in town, and they said a bearing was bad but it would be ok just to run it and not worry about replacing it until it failed.
I posted a description of it on LCML and received a lot of feedback about how people wouldnt drive the truck long distance because it was going to let go. That was 8yrs ago, 50K miles, 4wheeling, towing, highway runs, 100degrees on interstates, -30 here at home. The noise is still there.
Now the only time I worry is when the noise stops    Its like that little pause before a bomb goes off. But, still going :D
