Just started an SOA conversion on my Canadian M101 and while I am at it, I figured I would do the hub conversion to the Toyota bolt pattern.

Did some searching and came up with the direct hub replacement for this rig:

Then I got to wondering about the electric brake upgrade for this setup:

Couple of questions:

Is this the standard drum replacement everyone is using and is it a direct swap?

Also, are the electric brakes worth it and, most importantly, do they still function with the stock hand brake on the trailer?

Sorry if this info already exists on here, but I could not find it.

Thanks.

I am interested in this same question as well. I just bought a M101CDN and I am going to do the same conversion. I think the hubs are a direct swap, at least from my research on mud here and on expo. I don't know about the e-brakes though?

Skillet,
I was looking at this awhile back for my M100. The inner bearing was too large =>L68149 Inner Bearings (1 3/8" ID).

My spindle is 1 1/16 on both ends and I was thinking that the M101 was the same.

If so, are you using a different inner bearing?

The M101 definitely has a different spindle than the M100. I have my hubs all taken apart and the outer bearing is much smaller than the inner.

I am going to forget about the electric brakes. The trailer is not that heavy and with the RTT on top there is no way I will give up that hand brake. Hand brakes also come in handy if you have to unhook the trailer on the rocks or at an angle.

We have a local trailer place here in town so I am bringing the hub and bearings down there today to get the whole scoop and hopefully save the $47 shipping from the Southwest parts site.

I priced out brake conversion for our M101 CDN a few years back. Once the trailer is fully loaded, having electric brakes is worth it for us. YMMV.

What I found was that it was actually cheaper to buy a complete axles spec-ed with electric brakes than to buy two electric brake conversion kits. If that's the same situation when I get around to it, new axle here I come.

IIRC, yes, the electric brakes did have provision to incorporate the manual parking brake linkage. You're right, Skillet, don't give that up, as it's very handy in camp and on the trail.

So the hub is not a direct swap?

It was a direct swap. I literally brought my original hub in, handed it to the guy at the counter and within ten minutes I was out of there with all new hubs the were 6x5.5, new bearings, lugs, etc. I'm sure the mail order deal is the same.

2nd vote FOR electric brakes. Dexter (I think) did have a electric brake w/hand brake attachment. Guy that put my electric brakes on could not get thru to Dexter tech support to talk about the connection so we just went electric brakes. Just saying, the hand brake/electric brake kit is out there.
