I've seen lots of posts where guys are converting the 416 trailers into camping units. Typically what is the average price you will pay for one of these trailer?

Average condition?

Excellent condition?

Thanks

M416s are getting tougher to find, and I would rather buy one of the Canadian M101's. Similar dimensions but the Canadian trailers are much newer, have a few better features, some were barely used before decommissioning, and you can find them easier than you can find an M416. Koffer on this board had a bunch for sale last I heard.

If you find yourself wanting to do a bunch of changes to an M416, then consider building from scratch, there's no way I would have gone the M416 route if I'd known then what I know now. Too expensive/labor intensive/inefficient to do a lot of modifications.

M416s have a wide variance in price around the country. I've seen anywhere from $100 to $900 for good condition units. Usually in the $400-$600 range in most areas. Like Henry mentioned, finding them is getting to ge tough.

I agree with him. If you are going to take it much beyond the "basic bucket" utility trailer that it is, then build one from scratch. You will have a better end product and probably spend less too.

Guys,

There is one on Ebay right now, which is 50 miles away from me. So I have found one, real close, but not sure I am going the trailer route yet. Just saw it and started wondering. There is a guy bidding whos name is something rubicon though. I am sure he is a serious bidder.

If "imrubicon" is out here on the west coast it's gonna be spendy shipping that trailer.

I've had two m416s. Great off-road trailers, but I got tired of lifting everything over the sides. (No tailgate, and if you fab one in the value of the trailer goes way down). And I didn't want to change the lug pattern to match Toyota after I sold my jeep. Here in Cali they usually go between $800-$1200 for good ones. If you're patient you can find them much cheaper but they sell real fast. Back east I think they are a lot cheaper. I recall something about huge amounts of them being surplussed back east.

if you want a 1/4 ton off road trailer that came with a tailgate from the factory look for a Bantam post WWll 1/4 ton trailer. they are basically a WWll trailer with a tailgate that was cut in from the factory. they are somewhat hard to find but Ebay has them from time to time.

The most available and consistently in good shape seem to be the Canadian M101CDN, for around $1000 +/-. There seems to be a source for them in NJ and in Cali.

Join and look at the yahoo group for the M101CDN and you can find people selling and sources frequently.

local guy has a M105 for sale if anybody is interested...

Acme truck parts in Stockton California has a few Canadian M101 trailers for sale, if anyone is interested I could post the contact info.

I have 2 of the round fender WWII trailers but no fabbing skills. Would love to make one into a camping trailer. I think the expense of having somone fab it would put it out of reach and I could just buy a Hannibal tent for up top.

The M105 is the trailer meant to be pulled by a M35 (2.5 ton cargo truck... Duece anda half). You don't want one of these hooked to the back of your Cruiser.

Grouseman,

If you are located near or can get to the Denver, Colorado area a place called Cold War Remarketing has "as new as you can get" M101CDN 1/4 ton trailers. They are running $1325.00. Google them to find their website.

yup, they are rated 1 1/2 tons IIRC and about 2200 lbs weight.

I have to agree an m416 can get pretty expensive pretty quick. I have $1200-1500 into mine and I did closer to a resto. My m416 was a clean dmo with nothing but surface rust. I sand blasted it, repainted it, lined the intside, replaced the harness, springs, NOS lights etc.

If your going to use it to haul stuff and used it the way it is I'd find a 416. The cdn's m101's are nice but they've become really pricey for just a base unit to start from. I had fun redoing mine but if i had to do it again I'd buy a cdn m101.

If you want it to end up like exiled's or even kurts i'd start from scratch.

But, sometimes the journey is more fun than the end result.:)

Guys,

Thanks for all the help. After reading this thread it sounds like if in fact I decide to get a military trailer, it should be a 101. Less work, hassle, etc. Are the 101 and the 416 about the same as far as pulling? What about the weight differance?

Grouseman

The M101CDN and the M416 are basically the same trailer. There are slight design differences but you can not tell the difference when pulling them. As for weight the out diference is the GTW of the M416 is in pounds and for the M101CDN it is in kg. Both are 1/4 ton trailers.

Wizard,

The 101 has a tailgate, and the 416 doesn't?

SS

the US 101 is bigger
