Good afternoon, anyone ever hear of the rear glass shattering by itself? Just got a 2021 lx570 wife came to a stop light, heard a boom, rear glass completely shattered. I couldn’t find any rocks, nothing, but by the pic she sent me almost looks like it shattered by the defrost connections. Is shattering an issue on the lx I have a 2016 lc no issues. Can I bypass the defrost? I live in south Texas so no need for it.

Any other damage noted? Projectiles, etc are what I'm driving at.

I've heard of sunroof's shattering on some cars on hot day just by the delta between the hot outside and cold inside of the car (a/c). I had a windshield crack once just by defrosting some snow/ice that had built up on the outside of the glass. I want to blame sh*tty glass by the OEM (gMc), but it MIGHT have happened regardless of OEM.

I saw a small small pebble but kinda seemed like it would have came out of my kids shoes. Tx weather so was not cold at all. The defrost connects on that side w the hole.

That looks like some jackass with a bit of broken spark plug and a sling shot. Or, terrible luck.

Unrelated: is your wife an opera singer who likes to practice while driving?

That sucks regardless man - I hope you figure it out as it's not impossible it could be bad luck, but I haven't heard of the glass in these things spontaneously going.

She was pulling up to a red light, said no oncoming traffic.

Only time I've seen a rear window explode was when logs on a trailer were not properly secured. I'm guessing foul play of some sort or a freak accident, but I doubt it spontaneously shattered without some external force (projectile)

Yea I thought the same, but when I vacuumed up the glass, only found a small small pebble (like the ones that get stuck in a shoe as my kid rides in the third row).

I was reading through the service notes on Toyota app and found a note regarding the rear glass. “Customer states rear glass shattered while driving”
I never would have known, the replacement is Toyota.

so to clarify there are 2 trucks on this thread with windows shattered?

Does it say the price to repalce?

605 glass one (as aftermarket number was incorrect and didn’t fit) and 205 labor, plus taxes.
Great

I have an idea of getting a 2016 Rear hatch + new lights, to take the ugly out of my 2008 rear. Thus if I shatter the glass myself, and get insurance to cover rest, it will help a bit.

Apprecaite the info

Good idea. Maybe if you tell them the glass was shattered due to a head gasket leak, they’d cover….both?

Well this thread shows a pattern of it happening..... :)

My third party warranty was going to cover HG leak, BUT when I showed them youtube channel and it was called "NUT" they refused

Both my 2012 TSX wagon and my 09 Civid Si Sedan moonroof both shattered while driving. Honda warranty repaired both and lots of instance on Aucrazine of it happening.

The windshield does not shatter due to laminated construction. But they do crack due to bad install and just the right circumstances. I had a windshield crack like that. It was fine for a few years until a combination of fast heating/cooling crack it. I have zero deductible for glass so all good.
Other cause can be a small chip on the edge of the glass that you do not notice. It does not damage the glass right away but in time with the right conditions it will crack\shutter. The side edge of the rear glass on our trucks is not protected.
