So I just bought a 2000 lx470. It only came with what I would call the valet key(no key fob). I called two Lexus dealers, the first said they could get a key with a fob and it would be $371(parts+programming). The second I called said they couldn't do it without reflashing the computer and would be close to $2,000.

Which is right? Obviously not going to spend $2,000 just to get a key fob. Is $371ish the going rate or is there a cheaper alternative?

Well looks like I'm screwed. The key I have is a true valet key(doesn't open the glove box). I'm guessing even for the $371 they couldn't make another key.

Check here: No Master Key on 2003 LC

From what I've read, Lexus/Toyota will replace/reflash the ECU once in the lifetime of the vehicle in the case of losing all the master keys. They should be able to turn your valet key into a master key, and then you can program new keys yourself.

From my reading it seems like even if they will replace the ECU for free, you still have to pay for the labor, and cost of 2 keys which will be in the $400-500 range.

Has anyone heard of this website?

This place claims they can reflash your ecu, and program new keys for what seems like an affordable rate.

1999-2000 LEXUS LX470 ECM Reflashing Spare Car Keys

Find yourself a good reputable locksmith . Not a broker service . My local guy claims he could ref lash my ecu if need be . Luckily I had a master but still it was my only key . He cloned me two new masters for $150 . Now that my key is in his system he can produce me a new ones even if I lost every single key I have for my truck .

The "official" way the Lexus/Toyota dealer is going to handle this is to replace the ecu.

A good locksmith should be able to use an "unofficial" method of reflashing the ecu.

It's possible that the 1st dealer didn't understand that you don't have a master key, or it could be that they were going to do you a favor and sub the job out to a local locksmith to reflash the ecu. It sounds like the 2nd dealer quoted the "official" replace the ecu option.

Lost transponder key

I was in your boat; I only had a valet key for my 03 LX. I went through a Lexus dealer who had to reprogram the ECU. Your $371 quote is about what it took.

I recommend getting a 2nd master key (which I think is easier once you have one) so you don't have to do it again.

1999 models require the ECU to be replaced if you don't have a transponder key, but I do not believe the 2000's require that. $350ish for a new transponder is about right from the dealer.
