I pretty much never lock my truck. Recently I’ll head out in the morning and the doors will be locked. They don’t lock immediately but maybe when the lights shut off after a delay? I don’t know ‘cause I’m not in the garage when it happens. Never happens if I leave it for an hour in a parking lot, just overnight and not every night, just maybe 30%-50% of the time. Any guesses why or how to stop it?

I’ve skimmed through a few of the hundred and one threads about setting the locks to auto on or off while you’re driving but I don’t think that’s my problem. I don’t think mine lock while I’m driving.

I did recently program additional master keys right around when this started happening but I feel like that shouldn’t be related. Possibly the lock button gets pushed in my pocket at home, but I doubt it?

I never leave the keys in the truck so I’m not locked out but I do often have my hands full and it’s a nuisance to have to put stuff down and dig the key out of my pocket to open the door. 2006 LX

I had similar issues and found drivers door “switch” was faulty. The part that tells the vehicle the door is closed. Cheap fix and made my headlights turn off after exiting. J

Thanks. This could be it. I pretty much never use that switch until I was programming new keys and fobs and I switched it about a hundred times over a day or two. Problem has developed since then. Maybe that heavy use was too much for it.

How do you determine if the switch is faulty?

If I remember correctly its programmed to auto lock if you unlock the car but dont open the door. After a bit it will lock itself. If you have techstream you can turn off the features like this.

Thanks I’ll have a look at this. I appreciate the response.

This is the behavior that I’ve observed.

I’m trying to think it through. I get to the truck, it’s unlocked, I drive home (I’m pretty sure the auto locking feature is disabled - doors stay unlocked while I’m driving), when I get home I park in the garage, doors still unlocked. I shut off truck, get out, open and close both rear passenger doors, maybe front passenger door, maybe rear hatch getting kids and stuff out of truck. Doors still unlocked. 15 hours later I come out and it’s locked.

My theory was that maybe the doors are locking along with the headlight auto-off, 30 seconds or so after I shut all the doors and leave the truck, except that it’s so inconsistent. I leave my dome lights always off but I guess these would go at the same time.

Your answer makes sense I have observed this same behavior, except that I don’t remember unlocking the doors in these situations. Occasionally my kids have gotten out of their seats and played with the locks at the door switch then I guess I might have used the remote to unlock so I can open the doors to unload. But, I think opening the door cancels the auto lock behavior following unlock.

I’m wondering if it might have to do with the door switch as @LXINMT suggested except that my headlights do turn off now as they should after a delay.

Headlights aren't connected to door locks in anyway. If the behavior isn't as I described you may have a different problem. Maybe something is shorting. I hear you can clean the contacts on the switches but I've never tried.

Headlights not connected to locks, but in mine the switch was bad so the vehicle never knew if I opened or closed the driver door. So if I used the fob to unlock, it would register as “door never opened” and would relock itself. Also, when exiting the vehicle, it never registered as door opened, so the headlight just stayed on. It was difficult to find anything on this problem in the forums so I tried switching the switch from a rear passenger door to driver door and found that the switch was faulty. Look to see if when you open your door on drivers side if “door adjar” is illuminated(mine wasn’t) that’s all the help I can offer, I’m 2k miles into my 06 and still figuring things out .
