Is there a way to bypass the "safety" feature of the DVD player on an 2002 LX 470 such that one can play a DVD while driving?

Hmmmm... that Doctor By Pass thing looks interesting.

Or am I just going to run into Dr Problems?

MacNeill,

I did not use the Dr. bypass module. The hack is simple, cut the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) wire and the e-brake wire. You then ground one side of the e-brake wire and you're done. The thing that I don't know is if the e-brake wire and speed sensor are on the same location (harness) as my 04. Perhaps someone with the factory manual can look this up for you.

With my luck, the horn would blow when I went to adjust the seat after I'm done. :D

R3RUN33,

I don't much time now to explain this in detail as I'm getting ready for a long overdue vacation (so what the heck I'm I doing on the forum then, eh:rolleyes: :D )
Anyhow, do a search for AHC lift. You'll see that thread that Hoser started and he's got some good pics on how to do this. I ended up with 2" lift and that clears the 315 (35") but you'll have to do some light trimming to avoid rubbing on the plastic. I've yet to do this on mine. (If I recall correct, Hoser covers this on the same thread).
In fact, if you stay around 2", you may not need to modify the heim joints on the front (again see thread). As for the rear, a simple bracket can be fabbed up to get you the 2" otherwise you end up higher (see thread again). In summary, there's no permanent change as you can easily go back to stock.
You'll definetly notice the difference in acceleration and braking with 315, but the LX/LC are no rockets in the first place, right? Personally I'm ok with it. The added ground clearance and looks make up for it.
Long term... I may end up installing OME springs to stiffen up the ride a little. I ended loading up a crap load of luggage and other stuff for our road trip last night and it lowered the rear quite of bit. I started the truck up and it was nice to see the AHC lift the truck back up. How will it ride with all the added weight... I'll find out soon. I won't be back until Jan 16th. You can ask me then.

Check out this link. It shows how to bypass navigation in LC... might be helpful. http://www.pbase.com/drexx/dvdnavsystem
Also I don’t know if it is true, but multiple people told that if police catch you with tv on that is visible to the driver (IL), they can charge you with consequences similar to DUI! Is it truth or just bull???

Looks like it was for a 2001...would the same wiring be applicable on a 2004?

not a good idea IMO

I am going to try this mod as well. Did anyone find out if the 04 is the same yet?:D

Will cutting the speed sensor wire or the E-brake affect any other process in the system? What are they used for in the control or functioning of other vehicle saftey processes?

Don't cut the VSS wire, besides the speedo and ECM needing this signal, If you cut the speed sensor wire, your Nav unit will not track properly as it uses this unput, along with the gps signal to plot your position on the map, and calculates your eta. I have seen devices that interrupt this signal every 20 seconds or so to allow DVDs to play in motion, but it seems kind of not worth it to me.

I am waiting for the Viastech video IPOD module to be ready, which connects to the cd changer input and will allow you to have 15 hours of video or 15,000 songs available, and all selectable through the Nav display.
That will be cool......

Mikeacs,

This particular wire for the VSS does not affect the speedo or the navigation system. It's strictly fools the DVD changer into allowing the DVD playback and be able use dial out from the Nav screen while in motion.
The other wire is cut and grounded again fools the screen into thinking that the E-brake is on. I did this mod on my LX about 5K miles ago and it's been trouble free and I've been using my Nav quite of bit with no problems.

On the Video IPod, you may already know this, but you can get a Video Cam cable and plug this into the headphone jack on the IPod and then use the RCAs on the other end to connect to any video inputs. I believe Viastech has a module now that you has extra audio/video inputs that would allow this.
On my recent road trip, I loaded 10-12 DVDs on my 30GB Video Ipod and use the above cable to plug into the rear factory screen. The kids were happy and we had a pleasant and enjoyable road trip

CTapia ... yours is an 04 LX and mine an 04 LC they should be the same right? Do you remember the color & location of the wires?

Ctapia, I knew about going into the rear video system, but they are supposedly (viastech) about to release the harness that ties right into the nav and actually displays the song or movie titles. anyway that sounds like a pretty cool setup with the rear video you have there

I thought the viastech device was already out for the ipod and our vehicles. Maybe I will wait to get the device and do the mods all at once so I don't have to pull the dash apart multiple times and risk breaking the tabs or wood trim. Has anyone broken theirs? Is it expensive to replace or can you make it work broken?

Gene3X,

I followed the post by laxman310 to get this done. See the above link on the Lexus Owners Club site. I can't confirm that the colors would be the same or in the same location, so you'll have to read that and compare to yours.

Mikeacs,

What I have for the rear screen did not require any modifications other than getting the Video Ipod and using my video RCA cable from my Sony Camcorder. I do have the DVD player in the back, however we had a fully loaded truck during our last road trip and there was no access to it with all the luggage.
The new viastech module should may allow the video and audio on the Nav screen with one cable.
