I’ve seen the question asked in a couple of threads over the years but can’t find anyone who’s posted a clear answer.

I’m converting my ‘99 LX 470 from AHC to shock/coil suspension. Going to use OEM shocks. Are there reusable retainers on the existing AHC “shocks” that I can use on the OEM non-AHC shocks or do I need to buy the $300 in retainers from Toyota?

Yes, you can reuse two 90948-02173s from the rear and two 02175s from the front. So you'll need only 12 washers, not 16. Get them from Impex in Japan, a fraction of the price in the U.S.

So the 12 washers you'll need are: two 02170s, four 02173s, four 02174s and two 02176s. The current total price for all 12 is 5,860 yen or about $38 at current exchange rate. Buy something else you need and you can probably add the 12 washers to the order for no incremental shipping cost. The total weight of the12 washers is under 2 pounds. Clean up and paint (satin black) the 4 washers you're reusing if you're picky. They are an eighth of an inch thick, indestructible, clearly designed to be re-used in perpetuity, which is why they don't come with the new shocks.

Impex - https://en.impex-jp.com/parts/new/search.html

For washer locations get the parts diagram from Partsouq - https://partsouq.com/en/catalog/genuine/locate?c=Toyota Then enter a VIN number from any 1998 or 1999 Land Cruiser which you can get from an Autotrader search. Then "power train/chassis", then diagrams 4803 and 4804.
