Hi All

I'm currently running 33" MTR's and a rear Detroit Locker on my '95 part time 4wd SA spec 1FZ GX. I cannot afford an ARB locker and want to stay away from autolockers as I travel a lot on gravel roads where the 4wd help a lot but an autolocker becomes a problem travelling at my usual gravel road speed of 70mph.

What are the LSD options for an 80 front axle?
I've heard that the Auburn and the Power Brute are 2 possibilities. Do anyone know these LSD's, and are there are any other options.

Thanks

You may want to ask in the intl forum as most here are running with factory elockers or have gone ARB.

The factory Toyota MKIII 86 - 92 (USA) Supra 8" clutch type limited slip diff is a near bolt in... about the only "mod" I recall performing to install it in an 80 series axle was to grind about .5mm from the from the inside end of the axle shaft... it bottomed out in the diff. The clutch pack in these can be shimmed for more "bite" if you choose. They also seem to hold up very well, I've seen 2 from higher mileage cars with almost zero wear on the clutch packs.... They are cheap and plentiful in the USA, $100 USD give or take, though I snagged one for $50 once... not sure about SA.

The MKIV 93 - 98 has a Torson type helical gear limited slip, more money though.

bjowett,

So a MKIV 93 - 98 has a Torsen is a direct drop in fit for the front? I would be intrested in this mod. Is there any information on the bais ratio on that Torsen?

Thanks

One little problem, no Supra's in South Africa except a very few special imports.
BJ, anyway of helping source a clutch type Supra LSD in the US?

haha, i thought this was a chat topic! hehehehe.....

For USA sources keep an eye on ebay, they show up there. car-part.com has them at times... I can also keep an eye out for one. Some of Lexus 400 series cars may have received these, too. I'll check and see what can be found.

I don't recall the bias for the available torque split... I do believe there may be several versions depending on engine and transmission... maybe check the Supra MKIV web pages. One note for the Supra Turbo, later 6 speed versions have a 8.4" diff, and that will not work for obvious reasons. Some Lexus IS300 vehicles also have a version of this Torsen, unsure if it fits.

Thanks,
I love my country, but sometimes it's a real pain sitting at the rear end of the world when it comes to 4x4 goodies and especially knowledge....that's why I'm here too learn from you folks!

Brian you make it sound like adding a limited slip into an 80 is common. Maybe it is but I didn't know that. Does it make much difference to the on-road or off-road handling? Also they compatible with lockered 80s?

You may consider SA on the end, but you can still buy (at least a few years back) a brand new VW Golf MKI, something we have not seen in the USA since 1984 (the cabriolet dosn't count). Buying new old cars is cool.

Throwing a LSD into an 80 is probably not that comon... I had an open 80 axle on the front of my 4-Runner. Since the 80 front diff is pretty much the same as a V6 truck/Supra rear diff, placing those parts up front is a no-brainer. Unfortunately, the factory locker and LSD can't be combined... I disected the two diffs hoping the LSD guts would swap over, but no avail on that end. The steering is a little tighter with a front LSD, winter driving may/may not be compromised.

Oh well that dispells that then no combination of a locking diff with a limited slip.

Yes BJ, you can still buy new MK1 Golfs in SA and they are still very popular among young people as the cars in our country are very expensive.
My cruiser is part time 4wd so the LSD won't bother me at all on the road. When I do put it in 4wd it is on gravel roads and when doing real offroad obsticles. It doesn't snow here where I live at all, so I won't have any of the winter related problems some of you guys might have.
