Just wondering if it is possible/practical to put a TORSEN limited slip differential in the front axle of a full time 80?

I bought it with an ARB locker already in the rear.

Not sure if it would adversely affect the on road driveability (?)

Cheers!

Sure it would work but might make the steering heavier. why remove a superior bit if equipment and step down to an LSD?

His rear is locked, not the front. Although arguably an open diff may be superior to an LSD in front 99.999% of the time.

@Jeff Cooper- have you found yourself stuck because you don't have enough traction in front? I rarely use the front diff locker, and when I do it's in situations that I doubt an LSD would get me through. IMO it's not worth the effort. If you need more traction, look for a selectable locker. Or even an auto locker, there are some folks who have run those in the front that could give you advice.

I ran Auburn LSD’s in a granny 4 speed Ramcharger for a few years. They did amazingly well.

An auto locker in the front of a rig that’s still AWD?

People who have done it claim it works well. I can't argue, because I haven't done it. I have to imagine it would be better than an LSD though.

Yeah.

I sold a rig that had ARB lockers front & rear and in 7 years of owning that rig, I only had to lock the front a handful of times

The 80 does well with an op diff up front, but I am about to replace all of the axle seals, repack the birfs and my front diff just seems to have a good bit of free play so I’ll pull the 3rd member and take it to a gear shop. Just weighing my options if he finds any issues.

Thank You everyone for the feedback!

I would only do a selectable locker in the front of an AWD vehicle.

The Torsen style is unique, but it would still make heavy steering and extra wear on front axle parts.

That is what I was thinking, that it might affect the steering as well as extra strain/wear & tear

Thanks for your reply!
