I have parts on the way from Beno to replace a torn lower ball joint dust cover. The FSM shows a SST to remove the nut holding the assembly together. One, do I need this? Two, has anyone done this job - how difficult is it? Thanks! Oh, three, do Hundy projects ever end?

You need a puller to separate the steering knuckle from the ball joint taper. The boot R&R is easy although take your time with the circular spring clip/retainer that holds the boot on.

A little tip on using the puller: Once you remove the cotter pin and the large nut (24mm methinks)...you'll probably need to use an impact wrench on this nut because more than likely the ball joint will just turn...carefully thread the castle nut back on so the "castle" portion of the nut is facing the steering knuckle surface. Align the smooth bottom of the nut to the end of the threaded ball joint. Then install the puller. With the nut in position it will protect the threads of the ball joint just in case the puller slips...

Once the taper is broken loose then remove the nut.

Just be sure you are familiar with how to remove the knuckle...plenty of threads here explaining the process.

Up till now I've done all my own work on my rig, because of time constraints I'm going to a mechanic to replace the lower ball joint dust cover as well as do some R&R on a frozen up bell crank. Toyota dealer and independent dealer's cost is roughly the same. Is there any reason I should lean towards one or the other? Thanks for your opinions.

Yeah I just rebuilt my parking brake with all new parts...thanks beno!

I'd go to the mechanic you trust most and the one that's done the specific job before.

Eventually you'll want to source a puller to separate the upper and lower joints...it will come in handy for a variety of front axle, suspension & brake related jobs on the 100.
