Low fuel sensor as low coolant sensor?

When I had the fuel pump out to replace I saw the low fuel sensor.
Could it be used in the coolant reservior?
Could it be hooked up to a light some how?

Why not? If that float switch is the same as Toyota uses on the aux fuel tank, it is just a simple on-off switch that is tripped when the fluid level reaches a predetermined level.

It would be a simple matter of running 12v thru a light, interrupted by the switch. When the coolant falls below the selected level, the float drops, the switch closes, and light comes on.

All you would have to do is get inventive about where and how to mount the float in the coolant. In the overflow bottle, perhaps ?? Just a thot...

is it obvious that one would have a low coolant level in the overflow reservoir before the rad is empty, say?

The low fuel sensor is not a float type of mechanism. It works by having the tip cooled by the fuel. No fuel on the sensor it gets hot (relatively) and the warning light is triggered. There are sensors specifically designed that can be installed in the upper tank of the radiator.
 
I was looking to put it in the overflow tank. If the sensor works when it gets hot then it would turn on the light when the coolant got hot, not good.

I looked into one of the upper tank sensors from a semi but it worked with a computer and low voltage.

I would like to have it overflow tank. That way it will give you some time to stop and fix before you run out of coolant.
 
I posted something on this many many moons ago but basically I would sugggest that you go get the coolant overflow tank including the coolant level sensor from a Mercedes. Almost all of them have the sensor and almost all of them are a very similar size and shape to the coolant overflow tanks in our rigs. The tank in my 88 Mercedes would probably fit perfectly without any modification. A simple on off light on the dash would let you know when you need more coolant. Hope that helps.

The value of having it located in the top tank is that it would warn you when the actual level in the radiator is low as the result of a ruptured hose etc. In this case the overflow level would not change.
 
What is the final prognosis ?
