So glad it is still getting the love. I hope you are happy with her.

The list never ends it seems. I feel the same with the FJ80 I am dumping the money back into now. :(
Good thing it is a labor of love :)

The front springs are stock with just the shackle lift. Rear are a 2.5" lift spring of unknown make. Rough country maybe.

It does run great when its rolling. Is the tranny holding up? Planning on anything there to make it more road friendly?

Thanks broth. There is something to be said for the neatness of OEM.

I love the work you're doing with operation olive. One day when I've got the time, space, and skills I hope to do the same. It's a great inspiration.

I have a 67 Fj40 and put up a stock copper line on ebay if youre interested. Its immaculate and nobody has bid on it. It will probably go for 15 bucks and it will look sweet on your rig. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Toyota-Land...Parts_Accessories&hash=item35c451907a&vxp=mtr

I am happy with it, though she'll get a whole lot more love when I finally get it running well. I've got the new carb now and just need to find the time to attempt the swap. For now I'm just working on small things (replacing the side mirror, replacing the tire carrier).

Once I get the it drivable I've got a guy who I'm hoping will tackle the tranny and transfer case rebuild and replacing the oil pan and gasket. Hopefully all that will reduce the flood of fluids that comes from it!

Thanks jvincig01. The motor is a 71 f1.5 and looking at the line I'm not sure it's run the same as the f1. Any idea if it'll fit? If so I do like the idea of copper and would be interested.

A new Trollhole carb + a few minutes here, a few minutes there + a trickle charger (thanks Snowdogyyz!) = leaving the garage under its own power for the first time in 5 months!

Better yet, it managed to also return under its own power on both trips. That's a first! The trollhole carb is fantastic, running so much smoother and making it easier to drive. Only issue is that I think I've got a leaking seal somewhere since I have to keep the choke 1/4 open or it will stall out. But that I can work with. :)

Hey Mike, I have been following your thread and happy to see you have some resolve with your fuel issue and are able to get down the road and return. I am also glad to see you have been working on other tasks while waiting for your carb. I have been doing the same thing on my 67. It was originally Spring Green and my wife's uncle, who had before us, changed the color. I'm okay with the beige but like also like the green. He had just about everything inside except for the steering wheel and dash cluster painted the same beige color and I have been slowly repainting everything back to pewter. I also dig your roll cage. I have always wondered how one could be installed in a 7 passenger 40 with the larger jump seats. If you have some spare time, would it be possible for you to take some photos of the mounting points both front and rear? I'de like to see how they were tied in. Thanks in advanced and I wish you well with your rig...Steve

That's a great looking 40. I'd have a tough time choosing between spring green and the desert beige if I had to.

Here's some shots of the cage mounts around the seats. There are also a few from Jamison's build threads that you can find linked in my first few posts. He found a very clever solution of dropping the rear bar straight down between the arm rest and the seat. This lets the seat be about in its regular position so it's not jammed up in the back of the front seats. Let me know if you want more pics.

And here's the mount at the front of the seat.

And yes it is nice to get little stuff done while you wait on the big. In all my excitement about the carb I forgot to post a pic of the refinished tire carrier. It's not perfect but not bad for a first attempt.

Mike, thank you very much for the photos. Exactly what I was looking for. By the way, your spare tire carrier turned out fantastic compared to what you started with. Did you have or did you create any drain holes in the bottom corners? I am going to remove mine, blast it and repaint or powder coat as there has been issues with standing water in the corners. Keep Cruisin'...Steve

A few minor updates from the last few months: - new seat belts do all 5 kiddos can ride - a flaming river power cut off (need to have a few battery cables made to get it all hooked up) - a new winch line and fair lead thanks to Snowdogyyz

Only bummer is that the engine has developed a stumble, like a cylinder is missing. I'm thinking I'll replace the plugs and spark plug cables and see if that helps. I really hope it's nothing more then a fouled plug. Ugh.

It's been awhile since I've updated - not much time for Mud. The cruiser got some love this spring by a local 4x4 place:
- Swapped out the old SMT SM420 transmission for a rebuilt one I bought via Mud
- Replaced the oil pan and gasket. The old one leaked like a sieve from being bashed on rocks by the PO (but that's what he built it for).
- Rebuilt the front knuckles.
- New exhaust from the manifold back - this needed a little tweaking since the pipe ran straight out the back, so fumes would swirl up in the cab. i was loopy after driving it 20 minutes. We reran it out the side behind the rear tire and all is well.
- cut and rotated the rear axle for better drive line alignment.
- Fixed a leak in the carb and did a little tuning.

It ran like a top for a few days then had a fit - running rough and stalling. With all the money i put in to it, I was done for a bit. I felt I could only take it out on a trip that wasn't time critical and when my wife was home with nothing to do incase she had to come tow me home. Because of that it sat for a long time over the summer, unused and unloved. Then this fall a good friend and former 40 owner asked to borrow it for a trip across town. I said sure, but couldn't promise if it'd make it home. He was up for the adventure and all turned out fine. That got me back in to using it more and it's been great ever since. Starts fine, doesn't run too hot. I do have to watch the oil level, but other then that it's functioning well. It's a funny relationship - I bought this to be an escape from the stress of the norm, but it really became just another stress. But I think we've turned the corner. I might just be enjoying it more then I'm cursing it.

Steve - I bet it'd be getting a whole lot more use if I had a neighbor with a 40. Miss you and the family.

Dont know what it is but ive always loved the look of this 40. Came real close to going spring green with mine after seeing it. Awesome truck dude and good luck with it.

If youre still planning power steering think about the fj60 conversion. If you can find one close to you thats being parted go grab the ps box, intermediate shaft, and the whole column. You might one day decide you want tilt in yours if so youll have it. After that all youd need is orange 45s ps pump mounts a chevy pump and maybe some 2 groove pulleys (crank and fan). I took mine for the first rip after the ps was in and the difference was night and day even with 36" iroks on there.

Great to hear you are enjoying it again Mike! I miss hearing the sound of the F firing up and seeing all you guys pile in for a cruise. You should check out the ONSC group at some point. Very active club!

Definitely. Sounds like some good guys and gals in there. Let me know if you're ever back in town so you can come take it for a drive.

Thanks D. My 40 is like the little brother who's in awe of the the slicker, more creative, more capable big brother (your amazing build). LOL. I'm honored that my rig would even be associated with yours. You've definitely got me thinking about adding more character to it - making it a personal statement, not just a restoration.

Thanks man. I dont know if ive been reading too many rat rod mags but I know ive always been attracted to somethin unique and one of a kindish. Dont get me wrong I respect the guy who dives in completes a full on back to oe resto but put it beside a sprung over and dented 40 trail rig and ill pick the dents every time. To me, character is what its all about and yours has already got buckets of that goin for it.

Yeah I'm pretty sure no salt trucks were out before he was...
