Hi all-
I am still slowly working on the body of an 88 FJ62. I should actually start a belated build thread from the projects I have successfully (and unsuccessfully) completed. Obviously, after I pull out my carpet and get into some of the body work that I know about and the stuff I'm unaware of, I'd like to get some fresh paint on her. I have a paint gun and a compressor and I am also working on all the prep myself. I'm sure the project is going to take more time than I think. I'm wondering if anyone knows of paint booths for rent or if someone has a hobby shop that they would rent or lend out?

Cheers,
Pete

@Bike n Board Cruiser Check with some of your local clubs to see if they have any information. I know that in our area you have to know someone to borrow a booth, most shops will not let you "rent" their booth(s), too much insurance liability. If you can't find one to rent/borrow your other option is to paint outside (like I did) in your driveway or convert your garage into a spray booth. The latter will end up costing you a couple hundred bucks (assuming you dont have things like fans) for all the materials but will give you a nice clean environment. If I were ever to do a full job again, I would build myself a booth or convert my garage.

I don't really have a garage so all of my projects happen in the back yard. I am thinking of getting the temporary garage from Harbor Freight. My main concern is getting wind debris floating onto the paint. I try to be pretty self-sufficient and I think I'm at a point where I would like to meet more cruiser heads and accept some help from people who have more experience than me. I saw your paint process in your thread and looks really good. I don't expect show quality, just trying to keep it from rusting away to nothing. Greg, what size compressor were you running?

Yeah you are basically looking at doing what I did. The investment into the "temporary" garage would be well worth it, if nothing else grabbing one of those HF awnings would help with the debris on the major portions. The biggest issue I had was stuff blowing/falling into the paint and then having to take the time to get it out with tape. That process worked pretty good for the most part but it was just and annoyance.

I have an older Craftsman 25 gallon 140psi compressor and that worked well. While the compressor ended up running while I was spraying, it did not affect the spray PSI at the gun. Something that you will need to watch for. I took my time for the most part during the process so I would stop once I got all the way around the truck to let the compressor recover the tank and then mix more paint.
