Part of the whistle could be coming from the popped up moulding and also the sunroof wind deflector. I will say that if that deflector isn't perfectly centered and secure, at about 70MPH with a slight cross wind, you'll get a heck of a scare with a loud vibration sound that sounds like the roof is coming off. I took mine off and found clearcoat failure under the rubber gasket.

The sound was coming at city speeds (20-30mph) too. Also, the whistle goes away when pushing up on the glass. Not sure if that also means I'm pushing up on the deflector though, as I didn't really see how it was attached.

I also don't think there was any signs of leaking. we've had quite a bit of rain here lately.

Anyhow, I'm not sure how to proceed. To have my own mechanic check it out, I have to put a deposit on it. I hate to do that and then possibly have it be a pain to get back if I change my mind. After living with a Wrangler for so many years, noise has become a pet peeve. I'd rather have the sunroof not open/close than have it making noise.

Thanks

2. There's a distinct whistle coming from the sunroof. And when you push up and down on the sunroof, it definitely has a little movement and you can hear the whistle change. We tried sliding it back and forth, but the whistle didn't change. The "tilt" feature didn't work, but I could live with that. But as silly as it sounds, the whistle would really bug me. It goes away if you close the panel, but still. Is this common or easy to adjust ?

Not to freak you out, but sunroof repairs run from "free" by adjusting a few bolts, to big bucks, depending on what's wrong. Toyota doesn't sell the gasket that is attached to the sunroof glass by itself, you have to buy the whole shebang - about $500 parts/labor. If it's the outer gasket not attached to the glass, it's $40 bucks. if it's a baffle or deflector thingy, then rip it off. I know, noises bug me too.

...Are they more likely to fail at the early 2000 mark say 10/99-4/00... And the later builds 5/00-8/00 are better off? And is this due to Toyota changing the transmission that they installed/fixing the failing portion of the tranny?
There is not enough user data on build dates to indicate if there is any difference between beginning of the MY or end of the MY in terms of failure rates. Most people just indicated "my tranny died", and very few gave a build date. Frankly, give the scarcity of the failures, we likely wouldn't even have enough data for a compelling answer even if everyone DID indicate the build date. :meh: There is no indication that Toyota changed the transmission during the production run, or that it knew about the issue until well after all units were deployed. We can only guess if they ever ID'd a particular root cause and tranny production range with it.

So the molding on the roof has had something happen to it to push it up, the sunroof doesn't work, and it also whistles. Are these things possible connected? Was there an accident or some other abrupt force that changed the shape of that area of the car?
