Hello all

I friend and I are talking about building a storage section in the rear of my FJ 80. I am looking for the exact dimensions. I live on the east cost, be( will be building it), live in Arizona. I plan on driving out there for the install, but he can build it all up prior to my arrival. Knowing what I have seen on this site and the exactness of some of the work, someone must have a plan somewhere. Thank you.

This is what I have.

You could easily build a framework, then do the final fitting of the top when you arrive. Otherwise, fit may be a bit iffy with only this to go by. I cut cardboard templates fitted to lay on top of everything, then used them to cut the top deck. Also depends in part the deck height you plan. I used ~10".

Look at this post of the Spanish HDJseries forum on the 80 (also 60, 100 and 200): CAJONERA FQBAS (Brico rescatado).

It is in Spanish and measures are in milimeters, but the pictures may be of help.

Good luck!

Hola Cutrex. I followed that link to the Spanish HDJ forum and the drawers build.. very nice, is that yours?
..would it have to be homologated, or could it pass an ITV with the drawers in place?

Hi kevsta! No, that one is not mine. But that design is very clever and inspired lots of drawer systems, with variations which include my own. If you search in that forum with the keyword 'cajonera', many threads will appear, some of them with photos.

Homologation is messy, as usual. The theory is that anything that is bolted to the car structure becomes a part of it, therefore it must be homologated. People avoid it by temporary fastenings such as bottlescrews or tensioning straps. This way, the drawer is considered as cargo and passes the ITV (MOT for English readers).

My approach is hybrid as you can check here: To Drawers or not to Drawers - Page 9 - Expedition Portal. I did build a drawer system in a later moment for a journey to Mauritania (no photos, sorry), but t is unmounted during my daily life at home, and the platform remains bolted to the floor of the cargo area. When the ITV comes, I simply throw a dirty blanket on top of it. This way it is always ready to receive the drawers and the system is very solid.

Here is another thread where you can check details of both temporary fastenings and my platform: Mi cajonera terminada

Cheers,

Cutrex
