Looking for Tacoma MPG numbers; what are you getting?? (1 Viewer)

Considering adding a Taco to the fleet. Since I tend to keep my vehicles a long time, and in light of recent gas spikes, I am giving more serious consideration to fuel consumption. I am lookin at Tacos from 1995 to 2001 or so (4WD, Ext Cab; maybe Crew Cab), and am interested in the MPG you guys are getting. Definitely want a 5 speed, and until recently, would have said a V6. But Im thinking 4cyl, 5 sp right now. For any real hauling, I have access to two (Dad, brother) 3/4-ton full-size pickups when required. the other 90% of the time I will be doing light hauling and commuting. Am I kidding my self by thinking that the 2.7L 4cyl will get any better mileage than the 3.4L with the 5 speed. Like I said, in general, im a HP/Torque guy when fuel prices/economy isnt a long-term consideration.

I would love to know: Yr, Engine, Transmission, and avg city/hwy MPG.

I had a 2002 Taco Extended cab 2wd with 94k on it. I was getting 19/20 in the city and about 23/24 if I kept it at 65 with the 2.7 L. This was automatic.

It probably needed a tune up, but now Im driving a 90 4x4 Toy PU and Im getting 18 city about 21 hwy, with the 5 speed.

Thanks for the data point; thats about what I was hoping for with a Ext cab, 4wd, 2.7, 5speed. I know that Im not going to get Corolla mileage, Im just trying to quantify the difference between getting the six vs the four. If I had my way, it would be a 4cyl turbo-diesel, but Toyota doesnt think I need that in the US.

You are not the only one who is thinking the same thing. In S Florida diesel is 2.56-2.65 depending where one goes.

If I had the knowledge and the space, I could convince my mom to let me crank out some biodiesel.

She would bounce me out of the house, if I did come home with the implements to make my own fuel.

Its bad enough she barely tolerates my reloading bench for my match grade ammo.

I have a 97' extra cab with the 3.4L and 5 speed manual tranny. I am the only owner of this truck and have calculated mileage numerous times. I average 17-19 mpg. Depends on the time of year(weather) and the type of driving I am doing.

I have a '03 Taco with th 4 banger and 5 speed and I get 22-24 mpg on the highway doing 80 with cruise on. I know you said you are looking for a little older taco but I thought I would chime in anyway!!

'01, V6, auto (dbl cab 4x4) and average between 18-20. I've been keeping track for years and always keep the ect pwr on, and don't drive as conservative as I could. I have had both a 98 and 95 v6 5 speed. Both averaged about 17-18 mpg stock and got 16-17 with 33's on them. My current dd is an 05 with a 2.7 that averages 24mpg every time I check. The older 2.7's aren't as peppy, and actually get worse mileage. Gotta love variable valve timing.

I daily drive a 95 x-cab with 3.4 and a 5-speed with 210k and currently only get 17 in mixed town/hwy driving but that's with 5" lift and 35's. Back when my wife drove it at stock height, she routinley got 21mpg.

Here in the next couple of weeks I plan on taking the lift off and going to stock tires (bought a dedicated trail rig) I'll re-post my findings then.

I have a 99 Ext cab V6, 5spd on 33's with 6" lift and get about 18-19 in the city and 20-22 on the highway. I'm regeared as well with 4.56's. ...Steve

I am back to stock gears and tires but haven't gotten the lift off yet, so far just over 18 on my last two tanks of mixed town driving with lots of 4wd (been snowing). This is with the crappy winter oxygenated fuel which is worth a point in itself so I would guess to be right at 20 this summer.

I have a '01 Tacoma extended cab 4 cyl. automatic, Its not 4wd but it is a PreRunner so it has oversized tires and stuff. The gas mileage sucks, the most I ever get is around 18 mpg. I have friends with the same truck except theirs have 6 cylinders and there getting better mileage than I am. I wish I would have gotten a 5 speed or six cyl. instead because the combo I have now is way under powered, but all that being said I love that truck. I traded it about a year ago for a F250 diesel and after a couple of days I was sick, so I went and got it back, and paid close to a thousand dollars to get it back. I have put almost everyone of its 100,000 miles on it and never had a problem with it, it even has the original brake pads.

2000 Tacoma with 3.4L V6...

I bought my truck new in 2000. It's a 4WD with factory locking rear diff. and the 5VZFE engine. I used to get 18-22mpg with the stock 31's. I put on a 3" RevTek suspension lift and upgraded to 32" tires about 2 years ago. My current MPG is 17 but it looks cool and it's fantastic off-road.

I did 60 mph with 33's and a v6 for the last couple of tanks and have come out with about 18.5 on the first tank and 19.5 mpg on the most recent.

1998 Short box, 2.7l, 4x4, 5 speed, stock height, 31x10.5 all terrain tires, 93,000 miles on the odometer....overall (since May when I started tracking it) of 19.7 mpg over the last 11,000 miles....that is combined highway/city/4x4

On true highway driving I am consistantly 21mpg, overall city is about 17 mpg.....hard 4x4 use in the hills goes as low as 12mpg.....I live in Southwest Montana, and it gets a lot of use in the mountains...

Also, I know my speedo/odometer is off by about 5% on the high side, so these numbers are conservative and I am actually getting a bit better than they calculate out.
