Dallas,

You better have deep pockets, early longhoods are not cheap anymore! ( Been a porsche tech for 30 years)Do you want a project or runner? S . T , E? Early 911S start at 50k on up to 150k! Let me know if you have any questions, I will keep an eye out on the west coast( always looking for porsches!)

Hello! Yes, I have been saving / preparing for the day I snag one. How awesome to learn you've been a Porsche tech for 30 years. VERY cool.

As mentioned, I am looking at a few projects/runners out there right now and just about pulled the trigger on a 1968S, body work all done, just needed mechanicals and interior for 70k. I just had trouble with the options/color and condition of the project (boxes galore).

So I am back to the drawing board. I'd prefer a 67S In red/tangerine, something that runs or is complete and numbers matching. Then would be a 67 regular, followed by the same in 68. First and S, then an L...

There are some options out there, but nothing that has pushed me off the fence. Timing is next year, but wanted to get the word out that I was looking.

I may also have an incredible mustard 1978 to trade should the right car come along. However, might be hard to peel this cruiser out of my hands as well as it's coming together!

Thanks much!!!

I'm sure you are already scouring the web, but if not, keep an eye on pelicanparts, the samba, 914world (they pop up on there every once in a while), and early S registry. I'd also suggest joining PCA, as you get access to ads which might not be on the mainstream web. Good luck and happy hunting!! My brother has an 84 Targa and we've had a few 944's and 914s as well!

Don’t discount a 912! Been commuting in mine on and off for 5 years. May drop in a 911 motor some day.

Nice looking 912, they are fun and get along fine, But..., nothing can replace that sweet early flat 6 sound! As the years went on it slowly got quieter, carbs went away, cam chain got oil fed tentioners , bigger displacement. Maybe why the early cars are so sought after now! Bought 69 911 in 2002 for $2500!! Those days are long gone!!

@DCAlbarran a very VERY sweet 912! I love it man. Very cool. @whitey45 nailed it - and while I have been saving up a "SWB 911" fund, it seems the dream keeps getting farther away.

If I may vent......

You have big shops, backed with cash "Will buy your classic car!" advertising all over the planet. Pelican, various forums, BaT, Samba, Craigslist, Autotempest, I mean anywhere there is a car for sale, they are there sniffing about.

Now, I get it - that is their income. Gullwing Motors, here in New York for example. 50K for crusty, dusty, non-running projects. Cool cars? A giant warehouse full of them. I visited there and you literally are squeezing your way through dozens and dozens of million dollar gullwings, ferrari's, aston's....you name it.

But, I mean come on. I went to see a 67 911 project. Beat to hell. Literally, a total disaster. 49k. ZERO negotiation. I am 100% positive it was dug out of Nancy's garage for 8-15k tops. TOPS.

So, now you have guys like me - that are not in it to make money, but to enjoy the experience, find something we can enjoy. BUT NOOoOOOoOoOo. These classic car hunters are like alley cats.

The chances of me finding a barn 1967 911S? One in 10 million. So, I will continue to save my cash because in the end, that would be my ultimate weekend warrior. A 1967 911S. A friend of mine just bought one here in NY for 140k. It is, however. Perfect - and I do mean correct-perfect.

I guess I still have hopes up, someone will have a lead out there that their uncle passed away and their aunt is selling his old porsche. Or perhaps, the uncle is just tired of it and doesn't drive it much anymore.

Apologies for the Friday rant. - The search continues.

Any of you guys in the LA area willing to do a (paid) inspection for me on a 1968 911? (Compression/mechanicals and the obvious)?

Thanks!

I can recommend a couple great shops, depending on where in LA, and I can put eyes on if it’s in reasonable distance.

Ive been there before. They wouldn’t let you take the car to a shop, you had to inspect it there. I can definitely take a look at it, I don’t remember if they let you drive it either!

I found one. 1968 911L - couldn't be happier. It wasn't from Beverly Hills Car Club - which I would love to flame in public, but won't. A terrible company/staff and incredibly dishonest. I found one out east here in Tennessee and appreciate you guys chiming in. I think it is neat that there are some Porsche guys in the cruiser community! We have great taste!

Congrats Dallas, that is a rare bird! Look foward to seeing pics! Here is my 88 turbo, it’s a mutt, but a fun ride. C2 turbo body, big reds, hre wheels, 993 top, mirrors. Not a cab fan but bought this 5 years ago for a song, so I couldn’t resist!

That is a nice one!

A good friend who knows the car well sent me the auction link ~couple weeks ago since it was local, To say his recommendation is solid, is an understatement, congratulations and enjoy!

914-6 owner here...bought it new back on 9-14-71 and still pretty much oem other than a few reversible suspension/carb mods and a couple of bare metal redos over the years. Talk about enjoying that early flat 6 sound...it's inches from your ear in this one. We used to do PCA track days with a friend who had a 911L. Neat cars. My understanding is there were no 911S variants imported to the US for whatever reason in '68...the L was the substitute for that single year.
Enjoy...With Porsches even more so than Cruisers, it pays to buy the best you can afford and take advantage of someone else's hard work and/or upkeep.
