I am in the market for parts to do a mini truck power steering conversion on my 71 FJ40 (watchin' Sam work so hard at Spring Fling got me to thinkin' I ain't as young as I once was).

In additon to the usual 79-85 mini truck power steering box, saginaw p/s pump, brackets and hoses, I am looking for an FJ40 Steering column '73 or newer.

Before I start ordering parts, I wanted to see if anyone has some extras cluttering their garage and wishing to sell.

mini truck

Jon, got 90% of my stuff from georg, orange 45, here on mud. Shipping from Cali was not fun but couldn't have been easier.

Come on Steve, you know you had a blast . We started mine a week ahead of yours and finished it 2 weeks later. They were both a piece of cake :bang: It was well worth it

Hey, I bear witness to that fact that it was fun.

I'd like to explore using the lower mounting point for the pump like Mark Whatley did on his FJ60 PS conversion for the 40. I'd like to keep the stock air filter if possible.

Also, I'm torn with sticking with my stock steering column or going for a late model that is collapsible for safety and better supported by attaching to the firewall as well as the underside of the dash.

Not sure how I'll rig the pulley though. I haven't quite explored all the options (if there are any).

Got everything stripped off the tub except the fenders, apron and windshield. I also got the hood hinges loosened as well as all but two windshield screws. I'm just about ready to ask for some help pulling the tub and getting it onto a trailer for a trip to the sandblaster's shop.

Jon, you can't beat Georg for the pump bracket and the box bracket.

That said, if you want to explore the pump bracket at a lower location, check with Mark Algazy in Burbank, as he markets a bracket for the smog pump location for the saginaw pump. see pic.

If you want to use a minitruck pump, Lance at IPOR makes a mount for the same location.

You'll still need a high pressure line. If you go sag pump, JTO is the only one I know selling a line that fits the sag pump and the mini box, although any good hydraulic shop should be able to make one up for you. Don't forget a cooler - Summit's good for that.

I have a nice rivet remover if you need it.

Thanks Dan -

Is there any disadvantage to the lower mounting position that you know of?

Haven't a clue. You could always move your alternator to the right side like Tom did. He pitched the monster air cleaner for a smaller one to make room for Georg's pump mount.

Yeah, I was trying to keep the stock air cleaner. I don't like those little square jobs, Had one on my 80 Hilux 4X4 and didn't think it did a very good job, just made more noise and was too much maintenance.

Jon,

You'll like the PS. Old age and a wrecked shoulder convinced me. With no time or place to work on the Mule myself right now, I ended up going to IPOR. After looking at the choices, I chose Lance's FJ60 conversion. Those guys do good work! The PS is great. Now, we're waiting for the kit to add AC, since we think we'll need it in CAR - especially when every day is like what we've had this past week ;)

I was a little reluctant to make such a radical change, since I have worked to keep the Mule as stock as possible over the years, but finally figured what the heck - it's my truck, it's a working truck, and these changes will keep it working for me for many more years... it's not like I plan to sell her anytime soon :D

I posted some pix of the work in the "what have you done to your cruiser" thread, if you want a look at IPOR's work.

I contacted Jeffrey about the steering columns he had posted for sale. He doesn't have the switches (ignition or turn signal), just the column and wheel from a '78. I can wait until CMCC.

Jon,

I'm sure Bob,John and me still have one left from a '78 let me know if your interested I can bring it with me to CMCC.

I"ll pm you my cell
