Wanted Looking for another option: a rust-free, mechanically sound but ugly 40

ok, so I'm earnestly looking to purchase a 40. I have cash in hand as well as a pre-approved loan from my bank. Currently I have 2 possibles from this forum, as well as 2 from eBay. Thought I'd try another approach to see if anyone has a 40 as I described in the title. Rust free is priority. The reason this is my secondary COA (course of action) is that I'd really like to do a custom paint job, so a pristine, restored 40 would be wasting a good/great paint job.

So what ya got???

Budget?

Do you have smog where you live?

If so you'll either need to buy one old enough to be exempt or with the smog equipment intact and working.

Be careful not to be in a hurry, albeit difficult when you have cash in hand and are excited about a project.

Normally good advice to slow the roll...so to speak

Thanks for the great advice. I have not been rushing too bad. I almost pulled the trigger on one near me in Newburg for $32.5k. But the test drive didn't go well and I just couldn't pull it.

My top budget for a clean rig that is turnkey is about $32k. I'd be looking at about $12-15k for a solid, rust free ugly duckling. Of course it could increase if the rig has features like 4 wheel discs, rebuilt motor/tranny/diffs etc.

In my experience, A solid survivor with all it's patina in rust free condition and well sorted mechanically cost darn near the same as if it were repainted and in fact may bring more money depending on how the re-paint was executed. Survivors can be equally or more valuable than restorations to many buyers.

Yep, I can see that for untouched survivors. But I'm looking for something that's considered more than "patina'd" :).

Here is the rig in SD a week ago that had a cheap brown paint job but had solid mechanics, and sold for $16.8 or so. Minimal rust that looked fixed, as well as some nice features. Don't know the actual sold price- just going by asking price. Anyhow, that's kind of what I'm looking for. I know it's a tough ask..

Hi There,
I have a 1971 FJ40 that I purchased from the second owner this summer. I just had the original engine rebuilt. I currently have just too many projects going, and would be willing to sell it for what I have in it. PM me if you are interested.
Regards,
Dprstn

Hey, thanks for the offer but I recently picked up a rig on eBay. It's LeRoy Cordova's red 40. Body off restoration with the exception of the interior. He kept the interior original to show the clean condition of the patina. It has 58k documented original miles on it. Can't wait to get it here. It's going to be my summer daily driver. :)
