Year and Models

The is totally a debatable topic but after August of 1980 - FJ40's were better adapted to Freeway gearing with a 19 spline split transfer case, no longer have the drum in line with the rear drive shaft it was now cable actuated to the rear axle. That greatly reduces the drive line vibration. That combined with the helical cut gears of that transfer case made for better drive-ability, and endurance as well as greater top end speed - IMHO of course. Check out the FAQ here on MUD

Thanks a lot. I prefer to go for a 4 speed gearbox to enjoy the driving and have some decent top speed.

Which year model started to come with the ambulance door instead of lift gate ?

You should check out the FAQ in the 40 section, it's all explained year by year with somehow to buy stuff as well.

That project rig in Dunwoody looks real interesting. If I wasn't building my 80 I'd be on that one.

Hi there i looking for a clean FJ 40 in the Atlanta area.

I would rather got for something more stock.

Which are the best years model to look for ?

A lot of people will tell you that anything past 77 for the disc brakes, past 79 for the highway gearing possibly ps... I have had them from 67 to 81 and currently have a 71. I personally like the simplicity, thicker sheet metal, and look of pre 73's. Parts are a little more obtainable for the later stuff. It boils down to preference.
